Dad says he might be getting me a laptop for christmas. I found a few flyers from various stores and I have no clue what's good and what isn't.
I found a couple cool, [kinda] cheap laptops and I wanna know what you guys think would be the best.

I want to use the laptop for everyday things like:
- MSN
- Internet
- Drawing with my tablet

That's pretty much it.

Here.

"eMachines Laptop Featuring AMD Athlon TF-20 Processor"
- 3GB RAM
- 160 GB HDD
- Windows 7 Home Premium
- 15.6"
- $369.99

"Acer Aspire Laptop featuring AMD Athlon 64 Single-Core Processor TF-20"
- 2GB Memory and 250GB Hard Drive
- ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics
- Integrated Wireless G
- Dual-Layer DVD Burner
- Windows 7 Home Premium
- 15.6"
-$399.99

"eMachines eME625 laptop PC"
- Features an AMD Athlon TF-20 Processor
- 3072MB RAM, 160GB hard drive
- CD/DVD player and burner
- Up to 2.5-hour battery life
-Windows Vista Basic
-15.6"
-$349.99 - $499.99

Scratch eMachines, they aren't the greatest companies around. If you want something decent in the Laptop area, I recommend getting brands from HP or Toshiba. For getting something in the flier, that Acer is a good deal. You can do everyday life PLUS play some decent games if you choose to do so.

There are additional places to search for these deals (online is a given), but doing it online could be a bit scary since we all don't know where to look. So, I will leave you some recommendations through links with the first one being a recommendation to check out:

www.tigerdirect.com

You can also browse HP+ Toshiba websites as well.

http://www.shopping.hp.com/notebooks?jumpid=in_R329_prodexp/hhoslp/psg/lateralnav_notebooks

http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/home.to

Also, Toshiba is having a laptop sale this week for 20% off, so try searching around those sites for starters.

If your dad doesn't do online, then Acer is your best bet for your laptop.

Any additional questions, feel free to post back.

To be honest those are all pretty comparable deals, it really just depends on what you want. Are there any of those features you are willing to give up, or can live without. Like for instance the cd/dvd player and burner, or would you like windows 7 over vista etc. (personally I would get windows 7 over vista because vista has a habit of making a machine suck) Do you really care about a dvd burner, or graphics? Just consider what you're doing with it, and what you really want/don't want in a machine.

Hm.... I don't really like HP, everything I've read reviews on HP laptops and they seem to do what every other HP product does - fail and die miserably. I own an HP all-in-one-printer-scanner-copier and it died like twice already. Took me forever to get them to replace it, then the bulb died and I had to ship it out again to get it fixed.

The thing about buying them over the internet is shipping. ]: I bet it'd cost a ton to ship a laptop.
I'll be sure to check out that Toshiba deal though.

Oh yeah I'm definately willing to give up the CD/DVD player/burner & I'd prefer Windows 7 over Vista.

Agreed with the Windows 7 > Vista ordeal.

If it helps at all to decide what laptop you want, literally think of what you do when you go online. Do you imagine yourself burning CDs often? Do you often download a lot of music? All those little misc. information about yourself can determine what you really want.

Also, Beanie is a stalker! Haha, kidding <3

We are complete opposites then. I find HP to work on me often, so I'm sorry to hear that.

But you seem to be informed enough, I'll call this thread a day with you. I gotta get dressed for now heh.

I don't burn CD's at all. I rarely download music though I do sometimes for my iPod.

:O!! Stalking is a lot of work, maybe you're really the stalker here. lol smile <3

Not having a CD/DVD player/and or burner will not mess with your ability to download mp3's for your Ipod. However they seem to come standard on laptops and PC desktops anymore, so you might just have to live with having one. Have you thought of maybe buying a netbook instead of a laptop? I know they're smaller, but they are cheaper and will deffinately fit what you're trying to do with it.

I hope you know that brand names do not matter when choosing a laptop. What matters are the specifications of the machine. The only differences between brands are the type of support you get.

Certain parts in electronics die out eventually. How fast this happens is how the consumer uses it and/or if it is abused.

I wish I had Rydian's copy-pasta right now.

Are you wiling to order online?

i think that you should invest your money in a toshiba laptop computer because they work really well and are great for graphics control.

Brand is very important BECAUSE of support, especially for people who are not very computer savvy. You don't want to buy a laptop from a company that has their technical support outsourced to a country where you can't understand anything they're saying. You also don't want to buy a laptop from a company that offers limited support because they're a second rate company. Brand is very very important because of these factors.

Of those, I'd go with the first one, assuming it has a wireless network adapter.
However, Shipping on online laptops is usually cheap so they can compete with the stores.
You might consider getting a large netbook or ultraportable PC, since those are usually in your price range and generally have better battery life than just getting a cheap laptop.

One last note: Don't count on an emachines computer lasting more than a year or two without heavy repairs.

I wouldn't get any of the ones listed. I'd get a Dell, HP, or Toshiba. If possible, I would get Windows XP over Vista.

You can't buy a computer with XP on it anymore. Get Win7.

Although I'm not a huge fan of Acer, it's probably the best out of the three. I'd personally look for a laptop with a dual-core processor though, the performance boost would be worth the money.
