Im thinking about saving up for a laptop but I need help on what to get.

Ive heard enough stuff from people that Windows Vista keeps doing stupid things, so I was thinking about getting a Windows 7 computer, but I also really want a Mac, since Im an Apple kind of person, but theyre pretty expensive. So Id like some word from you guys. Thanks :B

Elitist and pretentious?

Seriously though, your budget needs to dictate your buying decisions just as much as your needs. Wants are nice, but you really need to focus on the first two categories (budget and needs) before you can cover your wants.

So what is your budget?

And what will you be using this for?
Windows 7 Has glitches of its own as well, I would say. Do some research about different systems in accorance to what you need to use it for.

Vista is pretty much on its way out as we speak. Windows 8 will be coming out soon, and I don't know of any current computer that comes new with Vista anymore.

As far as Apple goes, yes, they're expensive. I'm a fan of Apple computers myself, but no longer own one. Why? Because a Windows PC will do everything an Apple can for a quarter of the price. You can also theoretically repair a Windows machine yourself (or at least get someone you know to do it), rather than having to send it in for repairs.

You can run Windows from a Mac; Go with the Mac.

That's a needlessly expensive Windows machine. If you want/need to run Windows save yourself the Apple-Tax and buy a PC.

OK so you like using Operating Systems which have so many security holes that swiss cheese is envious? Anything is fine if you know how to use it. On that logic, I'm going back to DOS' CLI since I know how to use it and that makes it fine. Never mind that I can't run anything I need for uni on it.

Also you might want to check out Microsoft's official take on Vista's support lifecycle. Found in one Google search and 2 clicks.

I'm not saying I'd rather use it over anything. I'm just saying that it's not that bad of an OS. At least, not as bad as everyone says.

I'd use it over Windows XP, though.

Lol, the worst question to ask a group of computer users. They are going to be loyal to one or the other. Personally I am a loyal Windows user, but I do enjoy my iPod touch. But I have windows features in my iPod, thanks to jailbreak. iOS systems infuriate me in general. They are no longer completely immune to viruses like they used to be when they were new. And windows may or may not have issues depending on the user. Do you visit many sites that you don't know? Do you torrent? Are you attempting to hone hacker skills from home? It really comes down to what you use it for and what user interface you find the most user-friendly. Money isn't too much of a factor if you know where to shop. That is my advice.

The general consensus in my direct surroundings is that Vista sucked so skip that idea
I made the switch from XP directly to Windows 7 (actually I just went with dual boot for old skool gaming) and so did many of my peers unless they were in need of a new system in the vista era but even those who used vista for a while quickly skipped over to 7 when it came out (despite having the usual new release related problems)

Also what I mostly hear is that if you're interested in doing design and art related things Mac is the way to go. These systems usually have a longer life span than Windows computers (or that's what I hear from our local Mac fanboy who claims that a 10 year old system runs as good as 5 year old windows computers. I can't vouch for this statement since I'm merely quoting a mac user and defender)
I do think the art and design related comment is due to photoshop and others being designed for Mac initially, but personally I get lost on a mac due to the one button thing it has and completely different controls. I wouldn't buy a mac since I'm into game design and for gaming Mac has little to NOTHING unless you're talking about browser based flash games (So it pisses me off if leeks on the subject go all U NEED MAC if I say I'm going for graphic design). Nor would I be willing to go through the process of relearning the whole system of using a computer since a mac works different and that's my experience. You might learn it more quickly or be less stubborn compared to me. (I'm even unwilling to give up my azerty for qwerty despite numerous problems I come across in starting key settings and others.)

So mac is good if you're used to that or willing to learn the use of the system and aren't going to use it for any high end gaming. I also hear Mac gives more feedback if it crashes.

Also keep an eye out for the lifespan you want on your laptop. What you'll be using it for. I.e. If you're using high end graphical applications your laptop will be chunky and heavy and turn really hot when intensively using the graphics card. Whereas simple browsing, office-ing and other 'average person on the computer' applications will allow you to go with a lighter AND cheaper system (and will also be interesting for the mac option)

Now I hope I didn't OVER defend my personal choice and tried to make mac seems as a just as feasible option.
Any other user may feel free to add to this.

tl;dr mac and windows 7 are equals and it depends on what you want with your computer. Forget about vista.

No harm in having both; I was speaking of virtual machine anyways.
