Welcome to Gaia! ::

Alright, this may be a long explanation, so bear with me.

I received a laptop for Christmas this year. It's a black Asus Eee PC, so it doesn't have a CD drive and I can't download music and such. Oh well, I just want Internet. There are no other laptops in the house, so there's no need for WiFi. We talked to some Comcast people (that's where we have our Internet for this desktop computer) and they sent us our own router. I looked at the directions and they seemed rather simple. One cord was to be connected from the router to the modem. There was only one problem, though: the cable that I hada didn't fit in the modem. I have what is called an SB4100 Cable Modem. My mum and I went to Radio Shack and told them all of this. The one guy there told us that we had to connect the cord that was plugged into the Internet spot to the router, then the router cord to the laptop. So, as of right now, I'm confused beyond belief. Should I unplug the Internet cord from the tower or the modem, and by doing this, will any of my information get lost? Please help, I really want to get my laptop working. -___-

Routers are generall set up in this position. The tower is connected to the router, than the router is connected to the modem which is connected to the wall. Basically Tower->Router->Modem->Wall.
So what would I connect to what to get the Internet on my laptop working?

Just do my setup and make sure you have the right wires and ports connected and you should have Wifi. Modem HAS to be connected to the Router otherwise all you have is a network but with no Internet connection. Also you won't lose ANY information unless you accidentally knock your tower over and it gets destroyed while you set it up.
Did the router come with a setup CD?

Tower(Laptop) > Router > Modem > Wall

Between each device you need an ethernet cable and they all plug into a RJ45 port. It typically looks like a phone jack but bigger. The only exception to not having a router is if you only have one computer in the house.
x_Mr. Snowman_x, will I always have to have the router plugged into something or can I take it out when I'm done setting it up?

The Last Rydian, it did come with a set up CD. It's supposed to be used while setting everything up.

Aka Ichi G, I'm pretty sure I bought that kind at the store. Also, if my main computer is already connected to the wall, is there anything else I should do?

She wants Wifi. She has a desktop computer as well so it should be the desktop that's connected to everything.
Use the setup CD and it'll have diagrams to show you how to hook things up, it's simple. When you unplug the cable from the computer, it'll lose internet as long as it's unplugged, but it won't lose any saved data, don't worry.

Why would you take the router out? That's the thing that's sending the Wifi around your home. It'll barely affect the internet of the desktop anyway. Also, once your done setting up ENCRYPT YOUR NETWORK. If you don't do that than random people can steal your internet.

Sorry her post was hard to read cause it was small. Anyways you said the cable didn't fit? Why didn't it fit? What does the cable look like and what does the port on the modem look like?

You know I'm with Rydian on this one. You'll probably need the setup cd for this because explaining it may take awhile.
The Last Rydian, so if I take it out, nothing will get lost. And then I can plug it back in and it'll be the same?

x_Mr. Snowman_x, how would I encrypt my network? Any special site that I should go to?

Aka Ichi G, when I went to Radio Shack, I showed them a picture of the back of the modem and they said it didn't fit because I was putting it in the wrong spot and said that the right place to put it was where the Internet one was.
