Screencapping

What is the best way to screencap? I know of the method to press PrintScreen, but that only allows the screencap to appear on a clipboard to be pasted into a Word document. Is there a way for that clipboard pic to be turned into a jpeg? If not, what way is there to create a screencap as a jpeg? (Note: I do not mean from a movie. I mean from a running program or application from the computer, such as odfcopy, etc.)

The problem is you're using word for some reason.

You can paste the image into many programs, including image editing programs, which will allow you to make changes to the image and save it as a JPG, or any other image format supported by that program.

Exactly. I'm guessing you're using a PC, so the first best way to make it a JPEG is to open up Paint and paste the picture in there. There is really no other way that I know of. On an iMac, people can press Ctrl-Shift-3 to get a screen shot, but the majority of computer users have a PC, so it wouldn't help much.

Take a screenshot using Prt Sc button.

Then open up Paint.

Paste it there.

And save it as JPG, PNG, BMP, or GIF. Up to ya. surprised

JPEG quality in Paint is absolutely horrid.
Paint is about the only graphic application I can think of that doesn't allow you to customize compression levels when saving to JPEG format.

If I could suggest anything, I'd probably point you at Irfanview's website. Google it if you're interested.

Irfanview isn't that type of editor though..

You can make some changes and convert existing images, but not create new ones from the clipboard. At least not last time I used it.

Besides, even if you're right, saving as BMP from paint and converting to JPG with Irfanview would still render much cleaner, less artifacted results than saving as JPG from paint alone.

Not being a full image editor, and lacking a conventional canvas and a "new" option, that was one thing I never tried.
