Welcome to Gaia! ::

Hello there! My thanks to anyone who could help me or point me in the right direction.

I just recently bought a PSP and have had trouble getting the device to connect to the internet. I've tried everything I could think of after doing some research on how to connect but now I'm out of my range of knowledge.

I could not figure out how to find out my WPA key, which I would prefer to use based on information discovered yesterday that WEP has security issues. However, the last few times I've tried connecting via my WEP key, the error message I keep getting is "A connection error has occurred. The access point was not detected."

I thought at first that the MAC address was what was required, but now that I think about it that probably wasn't it. During my research, I couldn't figure out how to find out what my WPA key was and people were going into technical details that I didn't understand at all like B speeds and G speeds. @_@

For the most part, I'm at my wits end and would really appreciate it if anyone could help me out or point me in the right direction.

Do you have wireless internet? If so call your ISP(Internet Service Provider ) and get them to help you figure out your WPA.
I have both wireless (for my mom's laptop) and DSL for the family desktop. redface I don't know if that helps.
Your wireless router will only send out a single key. From what I've been reading, you've been trying to use a WEP key on the PSP to access a WPA encrypted router. That won't work. Square peg, round hole.

Your WPA key will be encrypted and you can't "find it" to be honest. Unless you saved it on your mom's laptop or the like, you are locked out.
Hm. Okay, so based on your post, Kiyoske Dante--my best bet would be to take queen of videos games advice and contact my ISP?

Edit: My other question that I'd like to know is what is the "access point" the device is referring to?

If the ISP set up the router, then yes.

The "access point" is where the PSP is trying to access the internet from. The wireless router is what it is talking about. As the name says, its the point where the PSP accesses to get on the internet.

Alrighty. I'll have to do that, then. Although, I'm somewhat perplexed as to why the PSP won't connect even with the WEP key--it's on the router, I would think it would work?
I think I finally got it working, somewhat. The device gets to a point where it's checking the connection but then I get a connection error that reads: A connection error has occurred. You have been disconnected from the access point.

Does this change things now?

Okay, that kind of helps. I usually get this error when the signal strength is too weak. Such as <50%. Try and move closer to the router, but standing right over it can be counterproductive. Find a spot that is ~80% signal strength, that tends to be a sweet spot for me.

If you are lucky, you have the right password and the signal strength is too weak to sustain a connection.

Hope the helps, and don't be afraid to come back if you have more problems.

I tried again later and it was finally able to connect! biggrin I think you were correct about the signal. The only problem I've encountered so far is there isn't enough memory, which I assume is due to the memory stick?
Memory isn't storage space, it's the built in RAM inside the PSP. Which is used as a workspace for the PSP to process things, when the thing it is too big for the workspace it can't do the job.

So it's not related to the memory stick. I have a 16GB card, and I still get memory errors when using the browser.
It doesn't like really intensive websites, large flash files it has big trouble with to. There will be certain sites you just won't be able to use with your PSP.

I only really use my PSP's wireless for playing online as the browser isn't one of it's best features. sad

Back to connecting to the access point... Back to exchanging key information. It does this until it finaly times out...HELP ME crying crying crying evil evil evil scream scream scream gonk gonk gonk
