Program to evenly light out digital camera images?

I don't know if the title makes sense, let alone if it fits here. But I've come to a issue.

You see, my family doesn't make a lot of money meaning we can't get many expensive things such as tablets and scanners that work properly. I'm fin e with using a digital camera but I've been getting into Traditional art since its more fun and faster to make. Now my problem is I'll go to a even lightened area and take the photo of the drawing yet when I get it on the comp its all unevenly lighted ( even with flash off ) and I need to know if there's a program to help even the light out and make it look nice. I have GIMP 2.6.whatever, but I don't know much besides the ink tool, brush and such stuff. If I can do this on gimp it'll help too. Suggestions are loved

that can be helped.
I don't know much about GIMP but I know about Photoshop.
if the image is only pencil I suggest before taking the photo you 1.) trace it with pen or 2.) make a second copy with pen.
preferably black ink.
take the picture where the lighting seems to be even on all sides of the room or take the picture outside in a porch or under a tree. This insures lighting on all sides and it's not to bright because your under something. (make sure the sun is out lol.)
Never take it a picture with flash on. That makes the middle part of the drawing/painting to light and hard to see.

best thing I'd suggest in the long run is to get a wacom digital art pad or any other tablet. it's less of a hassle and it should be compatible with GIMP and Photoshop. wink

Making the light as even as possible (maybe a few desk lamps) could fix the problem entirely, or at least make anything you try much easier. Highly recommended...

Yeah but her problem is that her family is poor, and unable to afford a tablet of any kind.

not sure about GIMP but i heard it's sort of a free Photoshop clone so i'll put in what i know about photoshop

assuming your picture is unvevenly lighted on one side (or one angle) to the other, you could use the gradient tool and select the foreground color to white and drag it so the darker side becomes brighter, then tune down the layer opacity so the white doesn't cover up anything and you just get the right brightness
