You might want to check the mouse properties -> Drivers to ensure the correct driver is being loaded for the mouse.

When you use safe mode, it defaults back to generic drivers, however Windows normal mode will try and use specialised drivers where possible.

Anyway, I'm having some computer problems. I'm supposed to be running in Windows ME, but it sure doesn't look like it. The screen looks like a way older version (like 95). I only have 16 colors running, and no sound at all.

I don't even have a cursor unless I run in Safe Mode. And if I do run in Safe Mode, I don't get internet or half of my documents.

I've tried running a virus scan, but it finds absolutely nothing. If anyon has any advice, please do help.

To get the internet in safe-mode, you must run "safe-mode with networking" This will run you all the things your computer need to connect to the internet

NOTE: If you have a DSL connection or any type of PPPOE connection that isn't "always-on" safe-mode with networking doesn't work online as it usually needs the 3rd party program to connect to your ISP's service...

Um. That's the info she gives with her computer problem. Any ideas?
Okay. I can only help this friend of mine when she's online, which, since she's currently not, I can't say if these things have worked or whatever. kthx.
double-post.. sorry....
sounds to me like you need to firgure out what 3d card you have and install the right drivers that go along with your OS (if you don't know, you may have to physically look inside your C and look @ the 3d card, it suusally has the manufacter on it somewhere. goto start/run/ type in "msinfo32" goto components/Display. @ the top right you should see a column named "name", hat should tell you what 3d card you have in your system. then goto the website that corresponds with that ex. ATI.com or nvidia.com and download the drivers for your OS (the above instructions are only for windows XP OS) Try that and see if it helps... replay back if you get it figured out as it would be nice to know if resolved your issue. biggrin
when did it first happen, and did you download anything in that day?

Easiest fix first: Since she's running ME, can she do a System Restore?

Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore.

Click Restore my computer to an earlier time, and then click Next.

Click a day on the calendar, click the restore point description, and then click Next.

Best thing i wud say is to reinstall windows or it the computer is fast enough upgrade to windows XP

when the computer loads up it should says on the logo what version of windows it loading

if it dosn't R click on my Computer on the desktop then properties then it shud say
try VGA mode
A virus and malware scan is a good idea, of course, but the display changes and other problems can often be fixed with something really simple like the System Restore function. If that doesn't work then there may have been some file corruption - her harddrive isn't making any funky noises, is it? - and running the WinME installer again will fix stuff without deleting any data.
