Welcome to Gaia! ::

About two hours ago I got some unexpected surprises on my computer: a virus and spyware. The only thing out of the ordinary I was doing was surfing Encyclopedia Dramatica sweatdrop

Forgive me for being ignorant but could I have gotten them from ED?

Come to think of it there was a weird "meet sexy singles in your area" ad that rythmically popped up and down in the lower right-hand side of the page right before my computer crashed.

EDIT: my anti-virus software said I had a RootKit.
What protection programs are you using??? Also did you get your computer "clean"
Norton Anti-Virus. I know, I know it isn't the greatest program out there but I live with PC-Hitler and if anything she doesn't know about is downloaded to the computer she goes Spartan on my a**. sweatdrop

We just updated and fully scanned the computer a day or two ago. Took ages gonk
To prevent this from re happening you could download firefox and use the AD-block plus add-on which is all free, no ads or anything added into it also the add-on AD Block Plus will auto update a list of commonly known ad's to block. For me my block count is around 4,000 this will also save bandwidth.
If I could I would sweatdrop

I use Firefox all the time on my computer at my father's house but right now I have to use the one at my mother's. My mother's girlfriend won't let me download Firefox because she doesn't know anything about it and is convinced it'll screw up the computer, even though I've explained otherwise. Plus, this computer is ancient and might not be able to handle another application. It's slow enough as it is with all the useless crap she has on it already (but never uses and won't let me uninstall).
