Welcome to Gaia! ::

@JayDi: According to my sources, Win 7 is basically like a better Vista. I merely quoted them to state the ups and potential downs of Win 7. Also 500 MB of RAM used differently than 1GB of RAM is still 500MB or extra RAM free.
according to many, many, many tests, it's pretty damn even.

and Vista uses ram as a cache, instead of as a resource.

Well in that case, XP is also there too right? Regardless, when it comes to OS, it comes down to com specs and preference from my experience.

Right. So don't bash Vista if it's the hardware that matters.

This is the way I'm going to put it, simplest as possible: If you are currently an XP user, and have no experience with Vista , I'd recommend trying Vista first, because if you know Vista, you know 7 razz .

If you have "bad" experiences with Vista, don't get 7.

If you have good experiences with Vista , either keep it (or upgrade if you don't use it) , OR get 7 if you feel you would like it enough.

That makes no sense.

"If you want to try a new OS, try an old one, and if you like it, then...don't actually get the new one, or keep the even older OS."

The hell?

7 is very good.

It's vista all over again.
If anyone believes that Vista and 7 are very different either I'm missing something or someone else is since they're pretty much alike >_> and use about the same amount of resources.

I'm just saying, I am tired of Vista haters, I realize I was one, that's why I hate them. If people would suck it up and enjoy Vista , they'd enjoy 7 a hell lot more than if they just went from XP to 7 without much thought.

I wasn't bashing it (I like vista very much in fact). I was just stating some of the advantages over vista it had (though I wasn't aware of the performance tests). Still I agree. Vista and 7 are almost exactly the same except that 7 is apparently more "n00b friendly".

And you are now bashing 7 pretty hard. stop please.

7 IS a new OS. it IS better then vista. if someone is considering going to vista, why would they go to another OS before hand at this point?

I'm not bashing 7, I don't hate it or anything like that (other than the task pane which I later found has a fix...tested it out on some computers at walmart...)

I know people who went XP>Vista> 7 very recently just so they'd get a better experience, plus for some people it's easier to do an upgrade install, which can only be done with Vista. Some people can't easily do clean installs (and some people are just lazy razz ) .

I mostly know people to do this though if they had the XP down grade thing, where they have the license and media for vista but XP installed, and they found it to be the easy way to get 7 as they could save money and upgrade instead of doing a clean install.
Hey stupid question out there for you guys. If someone went from like 95, upgraded to 98, upgraded to XP, then to Vista, and finally 7 do you think the OS would be really good or terrible?

You'll probably encounter driver incompatibilities.
And the need to install a ton of security updates when upgrading to the next OS.
And it would probably not overwrite every file, causing hiccups later on once you're running Win7.
Of course, that's just speculation. I can't back up any of what I just said, but knowing the normal behavior of Windows operating systems, it'll probably do something along those lines.

Nice! This thread was helpful, I think I will get Windows 7... but it's just too damn expensive!
If you're already running Windows XP or Vista, buy the upgrade version of Windows 7 (it's cheaper). Then just load up Windows, put in the CD and it will autorun. From there you can either simply upgrade and keep all of your settings and files (I did this and it was seamless and works perfectly) or you can click on "custom installation" and do a clean install, which is exactly what the standard Windows 7 DVD would do.
If you have Windows XP, you have to do a clean install ("custom install" ).
If you do a custom install, when it is done, go to your C drive and in a folder called "windows.old" will be all of your old folders and files, which you can manually move over.

No matter what you do, I highly recommend backing up your files and settings and such, just in case.

Other things to consider:
If you have Vista and do an in-place upgrade, it can take a few hours (mine took about 3). This is not really a big deal, but I do suggest doing it overnight or when you are going out of the house for a few hours, so you don't get antsy about it.
You can boot from the Windows 7 upgrade DVD if you have Window XP or Vista already installed. This can allow you to edit partitions/create new partitions/delete partitions if you desire, so if you are planning on dual-booting, now is the perfect time. I haven't tested it, but I have heard you have to back up everything to do this because it will wipe your Windows partition no matter what (because Microsoft doesn't know how to partition a hard drive, they're getting there though!).

Whatever you do, I highly recommend Windows 7. It's the first Windows OS since 98 that I've sincerely wanted.

Um...if each of those have been in-place upgrades then I could see it being awful.
If it was a clean install from XP to Vista, then I could see it running OK.
But then when I consider that means you're running a computer with Windows 95 standards, I know that computer will not run, because there is no way that can support Windows 7. Microsoft has a Windows 7 Upgrade Adviser (Google it) program which can analyze your hardware and tell you, though.
biggrin thanks guys you are the best
