As the person above said, it really isn't all that secure.

If you are looking for an alternative, let us know since suggesting alternatives unless explicitly asked for is against the rules of this forum and I like to keep my account thanks.

Windows Vista and older and soon Win 7 will be very insecure due to no more updates. If you are using it as a media PC then it might be fine but ask others to see what they think.

I thought Windows 7 has support until 2020?

I am going to recommend Ubuntu since it's got a similar desktop environment to Windows and you can run a live version, which means you can try it without wiping XP to see if you like it.

Requirements to run Ubuntu.

If you don't meet those I personally recommend Lubuntu

As you've probably guessed Lubuntu is based off Ubuntu. I've used Ubuntu myself and found it very easy to find things. If you do get stuck, there's loads of info to help.

Richard Stallman says Ubuntu is spyware?

Richard Stallman is a bit extreme with his views. If it's not 100% in compliance with his vision for free and open source software then he's 100% against it. He made that statement because Ubuntu partnered with Amazon and their Unity dash would suggest products when people did searches using it.

I'm also not a very big fan of the default Unity desktop environment that Ubuntu comes with so I actually suggest a Ubuntu derivative. They don't use Unity and hence don't suggest any products.

I'm currently using Lubuntu and I like it, though If I were to give a recommendation right now it'd probably be for Linux Mint with the Mate desktop. Here's the web page for the download if you're interested: http://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=160

What all do you use your computer for though? The only limitations you'll find with a linux operating system compared to windows are that a lot of commercial software won't run natively on linux (though most of it can be run with wine in linux) and many games that use DirectX won't run on linux even with Wine.

(Wine is a program for linux and Mac that lets them run some windows software)
There are lots of Linux distros which are very easy to use..some Ubuntu based ones are a lot better than Ubuntu
if you want a windows looking version which has wine and play on linux etc....which can run a lot of windows progs ...then you could try Zorin Remember if you have an oldish PC then you need to check whether your Ram etc can cope with KDE or Gnome desktops ..you may need to look at XFCE or LXDE..versions

Fair enough, he can be a tad extreme at times.
I've used Mint Linux - There's no good studio software for it though to my knowledge.

90% of the time I'm online, doing mindless tasks - The remaining time is spent recording/editing/encoding videos or making music in FL Studio.

How to fix Ubuntu.

Like everyone else has said go with some *buntu varient. If you are coming from an XP machine, Lubuntu is more than likely going to be your best bet. Xubuntu is good, though it seems to require a little more scruff than it used to and updates to XFCE are eh.

If your computer can handle, I personally prefer Ubuntu with GNOME.

FL Studio won't work in any of the linux based operating systems suggested here so far as it's a windows only program. There's a program called LMMS which is somewhat similar but if you've already purchased a copy of FL studio you'll want to try running it in Wine and if that doesn't work you'd probably be best having a dual-boot setup where you boot into Windows XP for just your programs like FL Studio.

Here's the site for LMMS: http://lmms.sourceforge.net/home.php

Since Windows doesn't officially support XP anymore, I also recommend installing Ubuntu for free instead. If you want to use a Windows program, see if the program can work under WINE. If you absolutely need Windows XP for a specific program maybe you could partition the hard drive into two parts and then use Windows for your video stuff and Linux for web browsing.
