The first was 2 years old the other 2 where brand new.

Well the old one may be worn out and the new ones may be defective i would take them back to the store and get your $ back asap

5% of all made is in the hundreds of thousands, poor IBM costumers.
I can honestly say I doubt I'll buy any more IBM products.

were they deathstars? because that ups the probability of breakage to like 438% or something.

I have bought 4 HDDs in the past 2 years, no issues. 3 maxtor, 1 seagate.
