good texting app for android charge?

just got a new Android Charge
and since i have no plans for texting
i decided to get a app for texting
anyone know a free texting app that works well?
right now using textplus which is fine for now, but dont like the idea of a new number just to text

i've been stuck with a flip phone for god knows how long
and this is the first time i gotten a phone like a adroid
and since my parents dont let me call anyone except on weekends (verizon)
i really don't know much about cell phones

and google voice?
