Welcome to Gaia! ::

Ok I'm really sick of Ubuntu because of the commands and now, after recently buying Vista basic, my computer does not recognize the CD. How do I make it install?

Please and thank you.

Is the disc reader you're using also a DVD reader, as windows vista is on a DVD not a CD?

Could you be more descriptive? "It doesn't work" doesn't tell anyone what might be wrong. You could have put the CD in upside down after rubbing it with steel wool, for all we know.

Yes, it is capable of reading DVDs. It was able to read the disk while I had XP. (But back then the Vista disk was illegal, but very much on a DVD disk which is why I turned to Ubuntu in the first place.)

My computer went into DIE mode.
And my computer did not come with an XP disk to reformat so... yeah. :c

Honestly, I'm just looking for command lines to edit Grub to recognize Vista. That's all.

I don't have a clue and even after googling it, I still have issues with attempting.

Is your disk drive currently configured as the startup device so that it will read the disk when you try and boot from it.

How do you do that?
I'm guessing I don't.

I'm horrible at explaining these things but I will do my best. (I'm not sure how it works in linux) but when you start your computer in windows you can press f2 to enter the bios setting at the start of the computer. You have to specify your CD-ROM as the primary boot device BEFORE C: or A:

After you've done that make sure you save your BIOS settings and restart your machine with the disk in the drive.

Ok thank you, I will give it a try. smile
Ok.

I tried numerous times going through a boot menu and startup.

out of all the tries, I only got it to say "Press any key to boot from disk", and when I did press a key... it made a beep noise until i turned it off. sad

mind you, I clicked on boot from disk but every time it'd run to GRUB and just restart. =(

When you go to enter the BIOS don't leave the disk in the drive, wait until you set it to boot from CD-ROM and then put your disk in the drive.

Ok. I'll go ahead and retry smile
Retried.

It's still just going into the GRUB thing even after saying boot from disk several times.
sad

Shouldn't the setup for Vista pop up right after or do I log into my desktop before it shows the screen?

Vista installation should pop up while you're booting your computer with the disk in the drive. Have you tried going into it from your desktop? Does it even recognize that there is a disk in the drive from your desktop?
