There's MS paint. You just need practice to get good at it. stare

Paint.NET but that requires Microsoft framework 3.5 SP1

Photoshop and Gimp are the best out there.

Photoshop without educational discount is closer to $1000. With discount it's around $600-$700. As stated earlier, MS paint and paint.net are great programs for drawing. You just need to practice to improve your skills.

I use photoshop elements 6.0 which works great for me and it came free with my tablet. So, if you were to buy a wacom tablet for drawing you could get it free or if not it's still much less expensive than CS3

I really agree with you, that is total bullshit. All you ahve to do is look. GIMP is a great tool, so is paint.net, inkscape and etc. I am only familiar with windows software and the ones I've used. And there is no such thing as a drawing software that will make beautiful art for you, that part is up to you.

And you do no need to be cheap to try out the free and open source software such as GIMP. PHotoshop is good an all, but like hell I want to waste over 600 bucks just to make sigs, or draw some digital art, I am no artist or professional graphic designer. The final product of the "art" is up to the artist him/herself and what tools he/she wants and how he/she uses in their pipeline is their choice.
