Use the right-click menu option like I said.

Yeah.. I tried that, but then it said it would delete all data stored on there. I already have 21GB of stuff on there and I don't want to wait another couple of hours getting that data back on there again.

There is no way to change the format of a hard drive without deleting all the data on the hard drive... This has been posted multiple times before.

From a technical stand point you may be right. But from a practical standpoint you are actually very wrong on that. Windows includes a utility to do so and I linked usage instructions in my first response to the OP.

Okay, I've finally fixed this! Thanks to everyone for all their help! One last thing though, does anyone know of a good program I can download that allows me to easily manage the backing up of my computer data onto the external HDD?

Formatting deletes everything on the hard drive. When you buy a new hard drive you need to format it for first time use. Backup your important files to a USB, external hard drive, CD/DVD, or network server.

Yeah, I got all of that. Now I just need a program that helps with backing up data to the external HDD, because I don't want to delete something on my actual HDD and then have to find it in my external HDD to delete it again.

PM Me if you added them, and I'll add you back! biggrin
This program looks promising.
DeltaCopy
It's a wrapper around rsync for Windows, that looks like it was designed to make it easy to schedule backups.

Could someone explain this process to me? How does it work and what's the point of formatting your hard drive? I'm about to backup files on my computer to an external hard drive and I was told I might have to "format" my hard drive.
OMGG!!!
