can't see desktop icons, but the start menu is fine

Right Click the Desktop.

Go to "View"

Make sure there is a check next to "Show Desktop Icons"

I don't think you're understanding my question.
Do you have files and shortcuts in your desktop folder other than system icons? I mean are you supposed to? Or do you organize your desktop to only have system icons?

yup. I have alot of stuff in there. system icons, games, random stuff here and there.

Then what I would suggest is doing a System Restore. This basically roles your computer's programs and settings back to and earlier date. It doesn't affect personal files, but it could affect recently installed/uninstalled programs. Try to remember when this problem started and then System Restore back to just before that happened.
You can get there through Start>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore
