Can't format the C: Drive

This error comes up everytime I try to format the drive.

Drive C: is currently in use by another process. Aborting format.

How do I get round this error and format my C: drive?

Windows ME.

In MS-DOS, "format C:" is what I used.

C: Drive.

Are you actually in DOS mode, or are you in ME through a command prompt window?

Try this: Boot into DOS mode with a startup disk and format C:. That way, you won't be trying to delete files that are in use and you'll be set to install whatever OS you please.

Did you use MS-DOS from in windows ME (such as the dos prompt) or did you try it from outside of windows ME?

And if anything, I would recommend making a boot disk floppy, and use that to do the format of the C Drive, that way you can be sure that the C Drive is not being accessed at all.

you need a dos boot disk, restart with it and Fdisk your c:

u cant do it from windows with the command prompt open

Do not FDISK, thats last step procedures and is for advanced use, Booting into a Floppy Bootup disk and using Format C: should work fine.

I had the Fdisk, I just forgot to use it.

Well... I'd FDisk it if I were installing a different OS like Linux or something to get the free space instead of the NTFS / FAT file structure, but other than that, yes.... let format be your tool.
