I pretty much detest Windows 8. I don't like the look or feel of it.
I bought this computer refurbished about 3 years ago. I searched high
and low because I wanted to stick with XP.
All of my programs are a bit older, and all require XP, Vista, or W7
to operate. How is upgrading my computer to W8.1 going to affect them?
Am I going to have to go out and purchase new programs in order to
operate them?

Also, the RAM requirement to upgrade is 1GB. I have .99GB.
Will I even be able to upgrade to W8.1?

You can install third-party programs that change the look-and-feel.

A few (not all) of your programs may require XP Mode.

No. Don't be ridiculous.

Yes. You do not have 0.99GB; you have 1GB. But I would advise you to upgrade your RAM and consider replacing your computer entirely if it's very old.

You can use Crucial.com's memory configurator tool to select the best RAM for your computer. It comes with a money-back compatibility guarantee. (Additionally, if you buy Crucial-branded RAM, it comes with a lifetime warranty.)

If none of the above options is acceptable to you, then you should seriously consider making the switch to Linux. Every distribution of Linux comes with free, unlimited access to thousands of programs, including one called Wine, which can run most Windows programs.

Use the Upgrade Assistant. You should take whatever it tells you about your programs with a grain of salt.

If you bought your computer 3 years ago new, then you should upgrade your RAM regardless. 1 GB doesn't really cut it anywhere today.

it's 3+ years old, I would get a cheap newer computer. Do you have a budget?

if you don't want to spend money at all, you could make a new partition on the hard drive and install linux (or windows if you want to spend money). So it would be a dual boot of winXP and another OS.

My brother has the same problem, unfortunately, he is looking into replacing his computer entirely. For the time being, he is borrowing a windows 7 laptop from someone.

In terms of upgrading, it might cost more to upgrade necessary parts of your PC than to actually go and buy a new one. Do some research, and pick whatever option feels more comfortable to you.

Thanks for the replies, everyone.
I'm just trying to figure out what my options are at
this point. I'm not in the position to buy a new PC, and the
W8.1 upgrade is $120, which I'm not in the position at the time
to do either.
However, I do appreciate everyone's input to know what I need
to do and what options I have when the time comes.

You can still use XP, but XP users will no longer receive
critical updates. We'll be more prone to Malware and Viruses.
There's more info on it here.

Thanks a lot. :3

High-functioning Lunatic

I'm still using XP, but generally only for doing fun things on it like...gaia, and reading webcomics and browsing funny videos. I had this laptop since the beginning of college which was ....6 years ago??? Its still working, but I do all my important work on my new laptop that is Win7. I heard about 8 and instantly went to buy a Win7 before they were all gone. (Personally do not like cool

Win7 works very much like XP. and many everyday things work on XP-for the most part. So if you don't care about getting another refurbished laptop, try to find one that's last years model, there may still be some out there with Win7.
