I am Using windows 7 64 bit and it feels as smooth as XP does with the SP2, but if i were you i wouldn't even take Vista into consideration, but to be really smart about it you should keep your version of XP, it hasn't gone completely obsolete yet. Its just that you cant get drivers for brand new part.

It was obsolete over 3 years ago.

Vista is better then XP. anyone who says otherwise doesn't actually know what they are talking about.

Yes, 7 is better then vista, but then, it's new, too.
Man I bet if you give Win ME he would quickly praise Vista.

If his specs can support 64bit then either vista or 7

Damn HTC, Slow down with the phones already.
But that "You" commercial is the bomb

I'm going to have to agree here. XP64 is absolute garbage. Its 32-bit backwards-compatibility is also hit-or-miss for many users. If you know how to hunt for XP64-compatible hardware and drivers, you're willing to change out parts in your machine as needed, and you don't mind giving up a handful of 32-bit apps, more power to you. Otherwise, jump ship to Vista or Windows 7. I ran Vista64 from its infancy all the way up to SP2, and I had zero problems with it. I've recently installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64, and it's been great. It's definitely a prettier operating system, and it seems to boot a bit faster, but real-world performance is about the same. Technically speaking, Win7 is the new standard and it has a lot going for it, so I would probably put a vote in for Win7. The new taskbar is gorgeous, and the Windows Action Center will definitely help keep the average user's PC protected, especially someone who isn't really intimate with how PC security and maintenance works.

Good luck.

Im assuming you have a 64 bit processor otherwise u cant run that type of operating system and also its not all that much better just more stable and sometimes a bit faster . If you have the money get windows 7 64 bit, otherwise stick with 32 bit for as long as you can to save cash. whee

Vista is s**t when used on a 32-bit system. It can't be trusted to manage <4GB of RAM properly.

If you mean that it can't recognize a full 4 gigs of system memory, welcome to 32-bit OSes. You DO want it to be able to address your video ram, right? 32 bits is 4 gigabytes mathematically.

If you mean it's memory usage, here's a quote for you.

Yeah, Vista will often use much more memory than Xp, and not only because it has a larger footprint.

Coding Horror has a good article ( http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/archives/000688.html ) on the subject.

Windows Xp didn't make very good use of memory for caching, while vista does alot more caching, which in theory should allow programs to start faster. If it needs more available memory for an active program it will shuffle things around. Vista just makes sure none of your ram is being wasted.

We don't need to rehash this. We've been over it eighty goddamn times this year and I'm sick of it repeatedly coming up.

Vista doesn't "use more resources." It takes advantage of otherwise-unused resources, the way every other OS besides Windows has been doing for decades. Vista doesn't "use more memory," it allows system caching to use more available memory resources, which gets instantly evicted when more free memory is required; which other operating systems have been doing for decades - it's called a "cache." Vista doesn't "waste video resources," it takes advantage of 3D hardware that for the last several years has otherwise gone completely unused. The redesigned sound and video driver subsystems is a long-overdue overhaul that should have been done in XP. The new UAC protection is also long overdue, and is something that every other OS has been doing for decades.

And this is a good thing.

Please stop making mountains of mole-hills.

I'd say go with 64-bit regardless of if you pick Vista or 7 (I prefer Vista to 7 but that's only for apperance reasons, they're still about the same >_> ) .

I think 64-bit is the most logical move to make, especially when you have a 64-bit processor and 2gb of ram. Just SERIOUSLY DON'T GO FOR XP 64-BIT IT SUCKS!

seconded, I'm running 64 bit Windows 7 professional which I got from http://www.win741.com for $30 and its running quite smoothly but I'm waiting until the system logs begin to fill and the comp begins to slow.

upgrade.. build a machine that can manhandle windows 7, like how that one $2999 build with two 4890 x2's and a dual core laughed at the face of crysis

Thanks for the necro. But while I'm here...

Have fun installing a 64-bit OS in a year when you want to upgrade your memory. As Rydian noted, 32-bit apps work in 64-bit Windows, and you get the added advantage of improved performance from the various 64-bit apps that are currently available and can easily transition to new 64-bit apps as they're released. You can't install 32-bit drivers, but 64-bit drivers are extremely common these days, especially since the VAST majority of OEM-built machines ship with a 64-bit OS. Even Apple finally jumped on board with Snow Leopard.

And your OS install is going to slow because of system logs? Even if that weren't retarded, you can delete said log files. Thanks for exposing your ignorance....

Short answer: No.

Long answer: I don't like making fun of people with mental handicap, so I won't. You may want to look into gaining disability payments and hiring a helper to make these kind of decisions for you.
