So. After Rob Liefeld tanked one book, DC decided that instead of taking the hint and allowing him to quietly wait out the rest of his contract doing minis or something, they're going to give him three whole books, while excellent artists like Marcus To are on the fence over there....
*sigh*
I never planned to read Deathstroke, Hawkman or Grifter. And honestly my outrage really has nothing to do with Mr. To directly (even though he is highly skilled, respectful and also appears to be a really nice guy). To me the true crux of the matter is the lack of professional integrity involved with DC’s decision to not only continue to give Liefeild work at all, but to give him three books when there is so much better talent out there. Truly new artists and writers with fresh views who really could bring something different to the table.
That was the whole point of the relaunch, wasn’t it? To mix things up and provide the audience something more than the same old, same old of the past 20 years? To triple the work of a creator who just recently drove a series into the ground isn’t just fiscally irresponsible, it’s an insult. It insults other potential (and possibly out-of-work) creators that haven’t had the opportunity to show what they can bring. It insults the audience because even though we spoke with our wallets, the company still didn’t listen. And it insults the entire professional industry because it is a blatant example of “it’s who ya know.”
What’s the point of working so hard to try and get noticed if time and again you’re going to get passed by because you’re not “bros” with the CCO of a company?
They brought in Liefeld because he’s always been “edgy?” My God. Wake up and smell the Aqua Net, this is not 1992. Large audiences are no longer interested in his work. He has not evolved with the times and has no place in mainstream comics. So what if he’s working on smaller titles? If you get a good team behind them they could be bigger titles!
ARG!!!!
