Well....is he? Personally, I've never considered him evil. Sure he's the devourer of worlds, but it's how he survives. In my mind, calling him evil would be like calling a lion evil because it needs to eat antelopes to survive. He's not horrible when you look at it from the viewpoint of he's hungry and he needs to eat to. I know for awhile he tried to eat planets without life on it, so he didn't want to intentionally kill people. But that's just my view of it.

So what do you think? Evil or not? Why do you think so?

I...dunno. I don't think the "[animal] eats [other animal]" arguement really holds up here. Galactus is a sentient being. A massive, alien one, yes. But unlike an animal, he still has the option to analyse his actions. The fact that he's a cannibalistic mass murderer who has a genuine physical need to kill in order to survive, rather than to merely silence the giant moustache in his airing cupboard that keeps telling him he's the son of God, doesn't alter the fact he's a cannibalistic mass murderer on a scale our puny lizard brains can't even begin to comprehend.

Galactus might be able to squeeze past the "mass-murdering b*****d" label due to him being Not From Round These Parts, essentially being a physical God in a daft hat.

If you were on the planet that's targeted by Galactus, you would be viewed as evil. I don't recall him saving anyone before he sucks the planet dry unless he needs a new herald.

I do believe Galactus is evil.. He eats planets..His daughter Galacta yes he has a daughter..survives by eating Infestations of another planet..Proving that you don't have to eat planets to survive. So I think Galactus does this either because it is easier..or he finds joy in bringing death to the universe...

Wouldn't it be more accurate to compare him to, say, Lestat de Lioncourt than to a lion? Sure, he feeds because he has to, but more than that he feeds because he LIKES to. He exists in a state that is not natural to his species, admittedly because outside forces denied him the choice in the matter, but still.
He is hunger personified, as the surfer says im Chaos War.

Okay.....so maybe the animal thing isn't the best comparison. But I wouldn't call him a cannibal. Cannibals are people who eat others of the same species. He'd be a cannibal if he was eating other God-like cosmic beings like himself. He's eating planets. I couldn't call that a cannibal personally.

That sounds like a good idea! mrgreen but if you thought of it, why don't you? or...why didn't you?

I think people have always questioned Magneto's villain status, though.

I s'pose, but when I likened him to a cannibal murderer, I was doing so because that's the nearest thing there is to something like Galactus in real life, a person who eats intelligent lifeforms and has the wherewithal to know that doing so is morally wrong.

Would you look more kindly on my proposition if I replaced the word 'cannibal' with 'anthropophage', if we allow anthros to refer to any sentient being, not just humans?

I think that particular dead horse has been beaten to the extent that it's essentially equine paté.

Hurm....yes I like it. But I just can't seem to call him evil...

I believe that Galactus is true neutral. His primary reason for existing is to gather energy that is needed to remake the universe after it collapses. The energy he collects will become a "cosmic egg" that the Pheonix Force uses to remake the universe. Whichever being is at the center of the "cosmic egg" becomes the new Galactus.

Ya know...I never saw him as neutral, just as a victim of sorts. But I can see him as neutral...cause he is. He isn't eating worlds for a selfish reason or to become lord of the universe, but he's not doing it to save people either, nor is he really helping anyone but himself.
It's hard for me to say that Galactus is evil.... but I think he is. While it's true he needs to feed on whole planets to survive, it's also true that he could let himself die so that the universe could be spared. By not doing so, and by not trying to find some way to cure his hunger, he is evil.
