Girl Genius also appears as graphic novels and, quite recently, the first Girl Genius Novel, 'Agatha H. and the Airship city' has been released. The creators of Girl Genius call it a Gaslamp fantasy, the term steampunk is also relevant here.

The story of the comic takes place in an alternative history Europe. The map has places like Paris, London and Transylvania on it... but also invented locations such as Mechanicsburg, hometown of the Heterodynes. The ruler of most of the continent is Baron Klaus Wulfenbach, an archetypal mad scientist and tyrannic ruler. But is he evil? Or is he, as his son Gilgamesh claims, merely acting in everyone's best interest and trying to protect his people?

The world, especially the wilderness between towns, is full of dangers - jägermonsters, battle clanks, constructs, despotic rulers... and the inventions of those who have the Spark.

The Spark is something to be feared... those who develop it become madgirls and madboys. Their inventions improve the world - but also cause danger to common people when things go wrong. Did I mention jägermonsters, battle clanks, and constructs? You owe thanks to the Sparks for all of those. And a fair number of the despotic rulers are sparks too.

The heroine of Girl Genius is, of course, a girl who is a genius. Her name is Agatha, and she studies at Transylvania Polygnostic university. But things begin to go wrong when two rowdy soldiers steal the locket with the pictures of her parents in it...

Anyways, if you have read Girl Genius, none of this post was news to you. I made this topic so those who have read the comic and those who are going to read it could discuss the story and the characters.

Who is your favorite Girl Genius character? Had you ever heard of Girl Genius before seeing this topic? Do you like Girl Genius? Do you hate Girl Genius?

I love Girl Genius!!

My favorite character is Zeetha. I actually only discovered it about 5 or 6 months ago, but I had heard of it before that. I always meant to check it out, but was a little intimidated by the vast amount all ready in their archives. I waited until I had a little more free time, and then I read all the archives in about a week. It's really good, the storyline's fantastic, as is the art.

My favorite character is Maxim. But I also love Bangladesh DuPree, Lucrezia, Klaus, Jenka, and Higgs. Oh and Captain Vole has his adorable moments, and I want Von Pinn's clothes (hey, she doesn't need them anymore, she has a clank body now! 4laugh ).

Krosp is indeed brilliant. I heart that cat! I think Othar is alive because he has the famous characteristic known as Dumb Luck, meaning he is so stupid that it brings him unnatural luck. Also, it could be that he serves the Other, or some other dark deity with purposes of his/her own... ninja

I also wanna see if my theory about his little sister (whos' name escapes me) was really the one that unseated Captain DuPree as Pirate Queen and how that ties in to Zeetha's rampage at that pirate base after her capture. And I ponder on Barry being somehow connected to the Master of Paris.

I learned after reading up to the troupes departure to London that believing the truth is rarely a good strategy with that lot. At least the obvious truth. Now if you excavate the truth from some ruins on a deserted island, you might be able to buy it, but the obvious truth that people go around spouting? Nope.

I wouldn't put it past her to have spent the last two decades building the Dragon from Mars (or something equal to it) to help her and the Spider Riders do whatever it is shes trying to do. World domination is just too cliche for that maniac.
