Because it is a behemoth of a storyline with a confusing plotline that got its fame for shipping rather than merit in writing.

Which isn't to say that the writing is bad, just, ... People didn't get into it for the writing.

because the servers--ie, the computers that actually house the website--are located in new york. they got blitzed by a hurricane. they'll fix things when they can, but new york's a bit rough right now.

I dunno I got into it for the writing!! The characters are written really well, excluding the newer ones that were just introduced (but even then as flat 2D characters, some of them are pretty gr cool Shipping came more as an after thought and even then I don't really ship anyone together.

But yes, as someone said above, the servers are located in New York City and well... It's kind of a wreck over there right now. Things will probably be back online later, but the bigger concern would be New York right now.
