Anyway, new scoring idea. Art and Writing get their own, plus two additional ones for each of them. Then there's site design, which is just a bonus thing; doesn't affect our decision.

Art
- Pacing
- Consistency (as we're having disagreements on Anatomy, I decided that what would be important would be that the proportions and such are consistent)

Writing
- Execution of Concept
- Character Development

Site Development (again, just a bonus thingy)

Just a few comments about your scoring idea from an outsider.

I'm not too certain about some of the categories you mentioned. Pacing seems to be an awkward choice in relation to Art, because I always felt pacing is an area that the writer is primarily in control of. What would be more appropriate is "panelling"; does the panel layout make it easy to follow, does the panel layout represent the story in the best light, does the panel fit the mood of the scene.

Consistency is ambiguous in my opinion and does not cover the main aspects of artwork. In summary, I believe that categories such as linework, representation (capturing 3-dimensionality, including relative proportion), background, alignment (of speech bubbles and placement of SFX) and maybe selection (ie whether the illustration was a good choice to represent that scene).

In terms of writing, i can see what you're trying to judge with "execution", character development might be a bit ambiguous since how much development can you really squeeze outta 20 pages? I also feel that there should be more categories under writing, particularly the script.

But then again, I really just skimmed the thread since the front few posts didn't give an update on the review system, so 'my stand corrected' if you have actually established more categories than the ones you mentioned in the quote.

We covered the paneling bit, but you make good points.

Edit: By the way, what about comics that have adult content, such as sex and a lot of violence? Should we allow them? We wouldn't be linking directly to all the pages that would contain such content so it wouldn't be breaking the PG13 rule here on Gaia. I...don't think. I'm not sure WHAT to think any longer since I got banned for mentioning what rating I wanted while looking for a role play, but it was perfectly okay for me to say I wanted a YAOI RP. =_=
That depends. Personally, I won't read a comic if it has a sex scene in it (unless it's pornographic, in which case I'm looking at it for reasons other than artistic value). I can deal with people naked, but a sex scene in a comic book is a little too much for me.

As for violence... meh. Too used to it to complain, although there is such thing as being too graphic, even for someone like me.

I am so glad that I have not gotten to the violence in my comic yet O_O It is about zombies, but there's more living peson vs living person combat than zombies vs humans combat. O_O Mine is pg, with a little bad language.
I honestly don't want to exclude comics with adult content. But I'm a pervert.

Well, maybe we should cross that bridge when we get to it. People with adult comic entries might not even enter it into the contest.
Since Gaia is PG13 based, I don't think anyone with an adult comic would parade it around on here. But I don't want them to feel left out, either, or have it seem like we haven't thought about this.

So how about we just say that adult material is allowed, as long as it isn't excessive gore and/or pornography?

Sounds good.
'Kay. Anyway, I think we should just stick with 10 points for Art and 10 points for Writing. It's vague, yes, but that's what the critique is for; depth. 20 points per judge x 5 judges = 100 points. Like a test. sweatdrop

10 points? I'm not entirely sure how that would work, though. If we're taking into account many different aspects of the comic (including paneling, consistency, execution, etc), how could that be condensed into just 10 points? Usually, if it's a test or something, each portion of it has a a certain amount of points that can be earned. Perhaps we should figure out some sort of point system and average together the total amount of points that each judge gives for each aspect of the comic that's being considered?

*breathes fire* What she said.

I'm a little unclear about which categories we'll have though, still. It'd be wiser to figure that out first, before we decide on this whole points business.

What about something like this?

Art (20 possible points)
- Anatomy (Taking into account styalization)
- Use of colour/tones
- Consistency (Characters look generally the same etc.)
- Design/Feel (This would be wether or not a particular judge likes the art)

Pacing (10 possible points)
- Page Layout
- Techinical Skill (Are the panels clean, lines consistent etc.)

Writing (15 possible points)
- Concept (Is it original/interesting)
- Tone/Voice (Do all the characters sound the same?)
- Grammar/Spelling

Miscellaneous (5 possible points)
- Web Design
- Something else should go here but I don't know what...

Anyways, it comes to 50 total points with 5 for each point (save Miscellaneous stuff).
The consistency bit seems a little contradictory, since we don't want all the characters to look the same. Design seems unnecessary, unless you're talking about character design. But that would open up a whole new category. Feel is important, though. Instead of anatomy, we should use proportions, I think, and add 'overall quality' to the list.

Again, pacing belongs in the writing category. Let's use 'sequential' instead, which would include page layout, composition/panel alignment, panel flow, etc. -And let's not be biased towards formats (right to left, top to bottom, etc.).

Concept is good, tone/voice is good, grammar/spelling is definitely good (although grammar has to be sacrificed on occasion in comics, IMO, and not everyone is a grammar whiz. At least I'm not). Pacing should be added to that, and character development, though like OneBlackPaper said, it's hard to really develop characters in just twenty pages. I've seen it done before, and quite well at thatl, but....

Web design will only get input, no points, we already discussed that. Hrm.... But those are just my thoughts on that. The sequential category has to stay or I will start flinging poo around.

When I said consistency I more meant that Character A is recognizable as Character A throughout the work, but I hear what you're saying on the other stuff.

;D I know what you meant. Still felt like nit picking.

You can hear what I'm saying, eh?
