Do people even read comics/manga?

I've done my share of manga reading through the years, I'm no specialist, but I've indulged. From my experience, It just seems like there's not a lot to gain from most manga. The scene is really crowded with terrible work and I fear the manga reading population is small anyways.

I think the reason I'm really asking is because manga is one of the only outlets I can see for my art but I'm not sure I won't just toil away for pretty much no discovery.

if it's something you enjoy doing, i'd give it a shot. true, there's a lot of people into it right now, so it kinda gets over-whelmed with beginner art, but it's fun and can be a versatile art genre. i can't say you'll get lots of attention over the beginner artists with more fans. it's easy to get lost in the crowd, so maybe make a unique style that's eye-catching or interesting subject matter. ^^

I have add so i cant stand reading. Ive read a book once though that i was so into that the teacher yelled at me because i didnt hear you at first because i was so into the book

When I was around 13, I brought so many tutorial books on drawing manga/anime styles, which pretty much sparked off into how I draw now.

Give it a shot, maybe you'll find your own style within it all.
And if it does turn out to be a waste of time, you can at least say you tried it!

Okay I've actually really wanted to talk about this. Ive only read manga for over a decade and recently started professionally selling my comics. I got really embarrassed at conventions with other indie/alternative cartoonists web they asked me what I read. I only really read classic horror genres. As it turns out, I found my perfect niche. Lots of people in the small press industry read manga! A lot of those people even read the weird "obscure" manga I like the most!

I felt a huge sense of relief that my favorite artists were into what im into too. It's nice not to feel embarrassed.

I don't even know. My comics are gaining some momentum and I'm just trying to figure it out as I go along. My boyfriend was helping me publish my stuff and he decided to start a small publishing co. that I apparently co-own.

I'm reading Claymore and I really love it so far. I enjoy reading manga, and once I'm done with Claymore I plan to read more.

I also enjoy comments written and drawn in the western style by western artists, like Batman and X-men. I've also read a few World of Warcraft graphic novels that I enjoyed.

I really try to, but most of the time I'm just too caught up in my own work, or various other things - games, talking to people on the interblag, that I'm so far behind on what comics I do like reading, besides maybe Penny Arcade.

I feel like a jerk, too, because whenever I see people asking me to read their comic, and I just think... "Ehhh I'd rather not." Then again, when it's a friend or something, I feel like I'd become overly critical in the same way I am with my own work.

I say go for it. But have a partner in crime to help you. It is not easy drawing a comic or manga by yourself. Trust me I tried. An extrahand helps you stay on track.

Comics are totally viable. (I don't know much about manga, but it seems pretty popular?) If you want to do print comics, a good place to start is at conventions. If you can get it printed, and you can put out enough merch to warrant a table, that's a pretty decent way to both get feedback, and to monetize your comic. The downside is that you won't get as much exposure as you would say, a professionally published comic, but it's a way to sort of 'break onto the scene' that's feasible for a lot of people.

Webcomics are better for self-publishing imo, because you can hit a broad audience, and try new things with less initial investment (both in time and money).
