Welcome to Gaia! ::

The name Hitler invokes the orchestrated genocide and extermination of millions of people- for the crime of being born Jewish, gypsy, homosexual or simply being "other useless persons"- as well as a campaign of terror that consumed nearly the whole of the European continent. It is not mythological, it is very real, and it is a name that has affected, damaged or even wiped clean from the Earth entire families almost seventy years ago, and it hasn't stopped since. We still feel the repercussions of this name today, where the name rallies and fuels actual real-world still-happening-right-now racial violence and death against innocent people by way of neo-nazi and white-supremacist groups operating in America and abroad. It is a name which has brought death to, terrorized and shattered families for seventy years, and will likely continue doing so well into a century..

Yeah I don't get this either. Or usernames with words like "rape" in them. I don't understand how allowing such names is a good idea, especially on a web site full of kids.
How is this even a discussion? The name is not acceptable and it would reflect poorly on anyone to associate with this person, whether corporate gaia chooses to do anything about it or not.

How do you expect people to know when something is wrong, if nobody tells them it is?

Something about that statement really urks me.

Considering how much diversity there is in the world, as far as religion, culture, sexuality. There are alot of different people looking toward each other and saying the other person is wrong.

Didn't Hitler say the Jews were wrong? Wrong religion, wrong hair color, wrong everything.

You can let someone know you're offended, but going so far as to call them "Wrong" I think is in the extreme.

Yeah, he was wrong. That's kind of the point here.

Are you seriously comparing the Holocaust to finding someone's username on an internet forum inappropriate and offensive? Seriously?

That is seriously what you are doing right now?

Are you honestly comparing someone saying "Supporting Hitler is wrong" as equivalent to "Being Jewish is wrong?" Did you honestly just make that comparison and feel it was wholly intelligent to post on the Internet? There is literally no good way to interpret that.

You're comparing anger over a highly offensive user name to the Holocaust? Hitler was wrong. That is the point. Killing 6 million people is extreme. Saying something is wrong is nowhere near that level of extremism. EVER.

No, I just dont get my ideas out correctly.

Im saying pointing fingers and telling people the way they think is wrong quickly turns into extreme points of views.

Telling someone you are offended by what they say or a name they've taken is fine. But the word choice of telling someone they are "wrong" is what I was trying to point out.

The holocaust was a horrible tragedy and an ugly mark in history. I truly feel sorry for the families that suffered, and still suffer because of it. There's no arguement there.

I just think that a stupid kid with a username isn't worth so much energy.

National Socialism, neo-Nazism, fascism and suchlike are not just wacky European things I should learn to respect, like making lutefisk and eating snails and Oktoberfest. They're harmful idealogies -- and don't try to use moral relitivism on me, because what else can you call something that led to the deaths of 70+ million people but harmful? -- and letting them pass by without comment is wrong. Letting people swan around keeping them alive, especially as a joke, is wrong.

No, seriously, what can you call blatant disrespect for atrocities, if not wrong?

You might be right about that, but once you take a stand on something you feel strongly about you shouldn't back down until it's causing you more pain than it takes to save your pride. That's the way I feel about it. And some of the people here were personally affected by something that this girl is making light of.

I don't think she would have made people as angry if she'd just owned up to wanting to be offensive, instead of hiding behind "it's just words" and "I'm creating controversy and sparking discussion"

That's the difference between us and the sort of people who allow this world to continue embracing such unacceptable and objectively-harmful ideas as bigotry and neo-nazi fetishism.
It seems like the common argument that people like Psycho Bunny and HappyHitler make is that they are trying to do something positive by changing our view of history and 'letting go of the hate.' They claim that anyone offended by their statements is just 'uptight' or 'hypocritical'.

That is utter bullshit.

In my experience people who think Nazis look cool or use racist and inappropriate screen names and 'humor' in an attempt to be 'edgy' generally turn out to actually be Nazis or Nazi sympathizers.

There was a guy earlier this year who named his kid Adolph Hitler. He claimed he was doing it to help people heal and get over the hatred of the Nazi regime. He didn't really seem to have an explanation of how offending people was going to fix that.

Turns out the guy was a Neo-Nazi skinhead clansman Crypto-racist. Card carrying member with tattoos to prove it.

So when I see someone using racist terms in that manner I tend to suspect they either secretly or overtly sympathize with the racists they are supposedly trying to depower through such use.

It is similar to when white people get upset that they are not allowed to use the word "******". Why oh why do they want to be allowed to use it so badly? What benefit do they hope to gain other than offending anyone for whom the word means, "You are not human".
