I never said I was actually offended by the jokes. I stated an opinion on what seems like a double standard. Also, it's just an easy joke to make. Like Twilight jokes. The latter of which I can't seem to stop making regardless.

...Something just dawned on me. What with the Marvel Universe, you'd think people would take a group of people randomly disintegrating in stride. I mean, at one point in Cable and Deadpool, everyone on the planet turned pink. In the same series, the Silver Surfer kicked Cable's a** literally all over the planet. You have planet-eaters, dimension-eaters, gods running around, mecha, vampires, etc. I would think by this point people would react more along the lines of, "Well, that's not the weirdest thing to happen this week."

I tried to stop doing Twilight jokes cause they were just too easy. I now have settled to doing them only once or twice a week.

You mean the Marvel universe doesn't react like that already? I thought they had.

What does bug me is when they act all surprised when folks come back from the dead. Seriously, death in the Marvel universe has pretty much been a rotating door powered by a slot machine. Stop acting all surprised already.

Well, that was addressed to the plural "you" that English doesn't have anymore, but if you (as in, you you) aren't actually offended by it being okay to joke at the expense of the Catholic church, I don't really get your point. Mine is still that double standards aren't double standards if one of the things being compared really is worthy of disrespect.

I would think more of the regular folk would get together to try to protect themselves from all the super people ruining their lives. The so-called heroes can be just as dangerous as the villains if you are unlucky enough to get caught in the crossfire, after all. Even in titles where there are magically no casualties (??!?), the constant damage to buildings and utilities and transportation would be devastating to a lot of people. I know there are some storylines of some titles that take that into account, but why aren't there more?
Okay, I get what you're saying. I had originally been talking about when it's pretty much talking about everyone who's member of that group. I think I'd originally posted 'Catholics and Christians' (Catholics meaning not just the Church, just people on the street) all have a tendency to be Acceptable Targets in general and ANY form of defense seems to be met with, "Shut up," even if someone can see how it really IS insulting.

Though when I posted the TvTropes link and said, "I rest my case," when you made the priest joke, that was mainly meant to be in a joking way. I just realized it may not have come off that way. /fail

Oh my god I shouldn't type when I feel sick and tired. D:

As for Marvel, there was a Hulk comic page I read making fun of the fact he never actually kills people on his rampages. If I remember right, the basic way it went was a man telling a woman about the amount of property damage, but stating that there were no casualties. The women gives the man an incredulous look and was like, "That's amazing. How is that even possible?" The man pretty much went, "Yeah, I know what you mean." Though maybe the reason no one really addresses the amount of damage and how it would affect people is they think it'd would start to be...less fun? I guess that's how to put it.

Lissa: Nah, it seems to me everyone is always freaking out, though it might depend on the story. And look at how much New York is attacked by super villains; by this point, it should just be a fact of life. You know, like living in Louisiana under the threat of giant storms attempting to kill you.
Fair enough point. I think it works that way because, at least in America, Christians are the majority religion, so there's little harm to be done in picking on them as a group. Well, it can feed into the preposterous persecution complex a number of them hold, but I take that as seriously as I take the complaints of my fellow white people that they're discriminated against. Also, while making fun of individuals on the basis of what they identify as can be problematic, it's another thing again if an individual chooses to take personally a joke directed at a particular group. That's where the question of "is that group deserving of mockery" matters.
I understand that. I suppose the main issue for me is that most of what I hear just sounds like a way of hating the people of the group for what they believe in, not just hating what they happen to believe in. (if I worded that in a way that makes sense)

But at the very least, the joke should be funny. Like seeing something that says, "Too many Christians, not enough lions." I don't that offensive, but it's not funny. The only thing that makes me think is, "I guess I forgot that killing people is okay as long as they're Christian. Bloody Mary had the right idea, then."

And dammit, I used to know some funny Christian jokes but can't remember what they are. D:
Sometimes the point isn't to be funny but to keep driving home how there's this horrible thing going on. Plus, it's often hard not to be at least very, very angry with people for what they believe in when they go on to act on those beliefs in ways that hurt people. It's so strange how we, as a culture, pretend differences in belief are as inconsequential as a preference for carrots over celery whenever it's politically inconvenient for a majority or people in power to establish which of their beliefs are true or false.

If someone gets defensive about being made fun of, however, I would never tell them to shut up. Rather, I would expect them to justify their position with honest arguments. Really, I see the reverse of what you're talking about happen more, though; people use their offense itself as a way of shutting up those calling out their wrongdoing or unsupportable beliefs. Like, "I'm offended that you're implying what I just said is racist/sexist/homophobic/etc.," is way too damn common. Pointing out and fixing problems takes a back seat to being "nice" at all times. ("Nice" as defined by those who have the power to do so, of course--because it's not nice in any real sense to deal with someone's racism, sexism, homophobia, etc.)
I guess the main thing here is that anyone can be an a*****e about anything. 8D

...Wow, I had to sit here and think for a moment about what even started this conversation. Also, how long have you been in this forum? Because I don't recall seeing you until relatively recently. Or I could just be oblivious.
I've been lurking for ages, but recently I've been procrastinating my schoolwork more so I have time to participate in (or hijack) discussions.

Like the 'Anti-Otaku Bill' thread? =3
I haven't read that thread in a while. The last thing I remember is an argument about kiddie porn (...>x> ) loli/shota. And that it seemed to start getting a bit ugly...

Also, whoever it was in one of the early pages had a point: why would Japan care about what people in another country thinks about that and how would it affect it in any way? Or something to that effect.

ANOTHER also, in case nobody heard... I just LOVE (read: sarcasm) the comments who defend what the guy said by going, "FIRST AMENDMENT!!1!"

The first amendment doesn't ******** cover any and everything, geniuses.

For everyone's information the movie did NOT make Nigthcrawler a preist, in the comic books he was always a devout Catholic, this does not make him a priest, he had many love intrests in the comic books, (no jokes cause that one was plain disgusting)

And seriously? whats with all the profanity? can't someone make a point without swearing up and down.
Last time I think I am going to come here, -_____- I thought this place had real comic/manga disscussions.
This is a general discussion thread; we can curse like [********] sailors if we're inclined to. If I'm actually giving critique, I don't curse as I don't view that as being the place for it.

Yeah, I think we know he wasn't a priest in the movies. And I'm aware he had a lot of love interests. His mini-series even lampshades the fact, where when he was in the subway, he made a comment on how three or four women just gave him their phone number.

But when I said in an earlier post about retconning his priesthood (in the comics) because he couldn't REALLY have love interests (unless they were going for a sort of 'forbidden romance' thing, but god knows there's enough of that), I was being snarky, but there's probably some truth in that. Nightcrawler is usually or tends to be portrayed as being incorruptible, so I don't really see him giving in to that. It's the reason why his (adoptive) mother hid that sword in his soul/mind: unless you are pure of heart, you'll be enticed to evil by it. Nightcrawler has, you guess, a pure soul that can't be tainted by the sword.
Way to make my point about using offense to try to silence people, ryruko. Also, it's a free talk. People can discuss ******** they want. And if so-called profanity makes your inner baby Jesus cry or whatever, turn on the filter. I'd suggest growing up and getting past the whole "using naughty words invalidates your arguments" sort of thinking, though.
