better reason to not use that word in your comic:

Not having to explain your whole goddamn life story until you're blue in the face every time someone is bothered by it (and plenty of people WILL be)

it's a heavy comic that explores issues people don't generally touch on, so it's not intended for the easily offended, weak of heart, or those of a fragile constitution. that aside, i came here to see if i was on the right track, not to see if others approve of what im doing.
Well if you're confident. I say do it! I think it would be an interesting take on a genre that everyone is so familiar with.

You're getting a bit ahead of yourself, I assumed this comic doesn't exist yet? Maybe actually make a comic before making all these bold statements on how edgy and not for the faint of heart (or pregnant women, must be this tall to ride THIS harem comic!!) your comic is.

the title of this thread says 'starting a webcomic', meaning its a work in progress, so i think i have a clear enough vision of it to say that it's not going to be for everybody. i don't understand why you'd assume that rather than ask me to show you what i've got so you could determine if what im saying sounds plausible or like complete bs.

I'm sorry I'm jumping to the conclusion that you aren't capable of the kind of reasoning and empathy required to have trans* characters as nothing more than fetish fuel by your use of

1. A demeaning fetish term for trans* characters (It is, I'm sorry, but it is. You can't boring-life-story your way out of that, my gender is not a goddamn trap because I did not choose my gender to trick horny idiots.)
2. Your incredibly flimsy excuse for using such language
3. this incredibly childish and idiotic 'NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART' s**t you're using to describe your comic.
4. You asked people what they thought and when they told you what they thought you were like 'buh buh buh but my life story that doesn't even matter'.

No, not every comic is for every body but if you're trying to make a comic about trans* characters and go around saying it's going to be profound and NOT fetish material then, gee whiz, I DON'T KNOW, maybe don't use fetish language to describe it. Wow!

Use the word to describe yourself all you want, who gives a s**t, but you're going to have to put up with this convo repeatedly if you use it in your comic or describing your comic to people. Which was my original point.

again, for the third time, i never said that my comic is going to be about a trans character. i just said it would be about a trap, which i understand is a cisgender male who cross dresses and is quite passable. theres nothing fetishistic about that unless you limit yourself to viewing it as something sexual, which is why i dont get all this rage. yeah its suppose to play on the harem set up, but not all harems rely on just fanservice; just look at ouran host club. also, i never claimed it would be a stunning piece of work. i just said that its going to deal with heavy topics that really arent common in bl or harem stories. since people are raging over a single term that wasn't even used to insult or describe a trans character, i know its not going to appeal to people who are overly sensitive. yes, i wanted peoples opinions, but i havent even gotten a chance to show the material i wanted to be reviewed. instead, ive been criticised for something that wasnt meant to injure or undermine anyone. ive used it when speaking to trans folks and none of them thought there was anything wrong with it, so it really surprises me that people that arent trans are getting offended and highy defensive over it.

Er, this is rather belaboring the point several others have made, but the term 'trap' is inherently sexualized. 'Crossdresser' is a description. 'Trap' is an action. While there's nothing wrong with an individual choosing to use the term to describe themselves, you need to be aware of the connotations of the words you put in your character's mouth, without the benefit of backing it up with your life story.
Take a look at the word's origin. 'Trap' specifically refers to a crossdresser (male, posing as female) seducing and entrapping a straight man, into fooling around with or having sex with this "female". It is a fetish. The act of deception and "Surprise, c**k!" is a turn on for some people (both on the revealing and discovering sides). The term is sexual in nature. While some have adopted it as a description, many others have not, and you are inevitably going to offend people by using a sexualized term for their identity, and be forced to constantly remain on the defensive.

As for anything involving subverting stereotypical harem tropes, go for it. I find myself incredibly tired of the stale formula seen over and over again, and while not a fan of the genre in general, it would be refreshing to see some changes (if done right).

And oh heck, let's get really pedantic. If you wanna fuss about acronyms, QUILTBAG is the inclusive one. LGBTQ leaves out several identities: allied, undecided, ace, and intersex, off the top of my head. And face it, it's easier to say.

if there's nothing wrong with an individual using the term to describe themselves, then it seems odd that people would make a big deal over a fictional character using it to describe himself in a fictional world, full of fictional people, and fictional events. people don't care about censoring the vocabulary i use to describe myself, however, it's suddenly much different when it comes to a character that i made up? hm.

i get why people think it's this awful word and i get trapping, but the majority of trap characters in anime/games eg. hideyoshi, hastur, ciel, bridget, haku, shidou, etc. don't intentionally trick anyone into sexual activity or present themselves a certain way merely to give others a hard on, since most people just assume they're biologically female regardless of what they're wearing. the only instances where they purposely mislead people is when going incognito as the opposite gender is necessary to do things like attend a certain school or to go undetected during a perilous mission. and they don't even appear in official hentai anime/games (except for the shota anime out there, and even then they don't trap), mostly just media that includes non-pornographic fan service. anyway, that's why i don't believe it makes sense to view it only as a fetishistic term. the whole trap thing started as a silly meme people on the internet made. plus, even if i was using a fetishistic term to describe a character in a story without explicit sex, what's wrong with using it besides a select group of people thinking it's offensive regardless of how it's used? he's not transgender and it's not like the notion of sex is completely absent. people would know that if they just let me show them my story rather than coming in here to focus on a very minor aspect of my comic. it amazes me that only one person understood what i was asking for. i thought i was pretty clear when i wrote that i wanted someone to lend an ear and share advice about the content i have so far and the comic making process itself, but it seems people have misunderstood.

also, the term "trap" is frequently used because it has been popularized in the anime/manga community to refer to cross-dressing boys. when translating, "trap" it's used in place of "男の娘", since that is the closest equivalent. "男の娘" is not a transsexual/transgender person, and it's not merely a cross-dressing boy despite how it's commonly perceived. it implies that the boy looks, speaks and acts like a girl, something "cross-dresser" doesn't accurately portray. this is how i understand it and this is how a significantly large community generally views it, so im not going to allow people who don't even know me or it's place in the anime/manga community to shame me into labeling it a hate word. they can think whatever they want about it, but they're barking up the wrong tree.

as you can see from a small segment of my 'life story', im very gender-bender-friendly, so im not trying to offend. i can't please everyone, and im not trying to. so for anyone else reading this, please leave it at that. i came here merely wanting to share my ideas of a spin off of harem stories (something i haven't even elaborated in my post), not to debate the meaning or fair use of certain terms, acronyms, or to gain anyone's approval. i've expressed all i have to say, so good day.
