Welcome to Gaia! ::

I’ve been drawing and writing comics for a few years, but have only recently started thinking of taking it on more seriously.

Mainly I’m trying to find the best methods to draw and colour comics and information on the best ways to use them.

At the moment I either use sketch book paper or copier paper, mechanical pencils, pigment ink fine liners and colour, add text and do any necessary cleaning up using GIMP 2 or Xara “MAGIX” photo & graphic designer 6.
I sometimes experiment with water colour paints, copic markers and ball point pens, but other than that my knowledge of and experience with other things is extremely limited.

At the moment I’m not having much luck researching elsewhere; could anyone help me out or point me in the right direction?
I'm only a student, but I'll say something. If someone feels I am incorrect, please share your opinion.

I don't think a "best method" exists. I think it depends on what you are trying to achieve with the piece. It was suggested by my instructors to play around with as many tools with I can and not tie myself down. I may be misunderstanding, but it seems like it depends on the individual.

I’m aware there isn’t really a best method, I’m an art student and do a lot of development work.
I was more looking for different materials I could use than a best method.
Thanks anyway.

Different materials in general? I'm not sure what you are asking. A lot of choosing materials relies on personal preferences and the sort of comic being done.
If you're just looking for materials in general, maybe try going to the art store and picking up things that catch your interest? Maybe try drawing inspiration from modern/sculptural/unconventional artists? Anything can be used for art.

There really is no best or right way to use materials, although it is possible to learn techniques. For that you can read books or take classes. Many materials will also come packaged with basic instructions. You'll mostly be learning through trial and error, though so...
