morphE is a visual novel webcomic hosted on Smackjeeves about five strangers who wake up in crates with no memory of how they got there. They now find themselves in the custody of a mage who wishes to teach them the art of magic and how to defend themselves in the World of Darkness.

Displayed using Flash (sorry mobile users!), the comic is updated 3 times a week and follows a Visual Novel format with character sprites on backgrounds. The creative team includes 2 artists, an artist for sprites and one for backgrounds and CGs.

You press the yellow arrow to flip to the next frame. Most updates have 6 frames to them, though since update 90 the average has been pushing 10-12. There are sound effects, brief animations and CG artwork during more dramatic scenes.

Thus far there have been 2 movie scenes with some voice acting and 2 playable segments which run like a point-and-click adventure where you click various items in the background and the characters react to it, only allowing you to move to the next update when the correct item is clicked.

One of the four creators is a music major and has been adding background moments to key moments such as the movie scenes and the exposition scenes which detail how magic works in the World of Darkness.

The project is a labor of love from the four creators and we're always attempting to find new ways to make the comic seem more dynamic than its sprite art limitations would make it seem. For instance a recent action page had us emulating special attack scenes from JRPGs to prevent just typing "Adrestia punched the dummy and it was awesome".

If nothing else it's a strange project and worth a look to see a group who are trying to approach our story a little differently. The biggest downside is that because Smackjeeves does not support HTML5 we are forced to use Flash which alienates mobile users.

Anyway if you're still reading, thank you so much. I'd love to hear feedback. Just please go easy on the first 50 or so updates. We were trying to find our feet. We still are but the quality really does improve by Chapter 2.
