When Catriona first saw the wound she couldn't help but feel impressed. It was rare to see an infection this pronounced on a person still living; and when Rachel said she was bitten by a Flesher ....
"Are you sure a Flesher bit you?" Catriona said her voice as steady as her hands.
"Yes dammit," Rachel let a groan escape between her teeth. "I doubt it was a rabbit." Rachel saw the expression on Catrionas' face andsaid quickly, "I'm immune, don't worry, I won't turn."
Catriona raised her eyebrow. "You're gonna have to explain that to me later over a beer."
Rachel barked out a short laugh. "Sure, and you can tell me your story."
Catriona looked at her speculatively. "Let's just fix this, okay?"
Catriona reached into her backpack and removed a pillow case, she started ripping it into long strips. That done, she turned to Elfi. "Pass me the hydrogen peroxide, would you?" Rachel blanched and tried to protest. "I have to clean the wound and this is all we have, would you hold still?" Unscrewing the cap she upended half the bottle into the wound, the infection started to fizz and yellow foam started dripping out of the wound. Rachel moaned and a single tear squeezed itself out of her tightly closed eyes.
"You son of a b***h, that hurts,"
Catriona smiled humourlessly. "What did you expect? Just wait 'til I cautorise it, you're gonna love that."
Rachel grimaced. "You're loving this aren't you? Just like a doctor; deriving pleasure from her patients pain."
Catriona started wiping the foam away and poured some water into the wound. "Oh yeah, us doctors are perverted," she smiled grimly as she pulled out a hung of bark from Rachels arm.
She turned to Friedrich and pointed at the fire and the pole they had been using as a spit. "Oi, toughguy! Heat up that metal pole over there for me would you?" Friedrich inserted the pole into the coals of the fire without acknowledging Catriona at all.
Catriona returned her attention to Rachel. "I can give you something for the pain so you won't feel it as much if you want," Rachel nodded yes.
After a time Friedrich brought the pole to Catriona, it was glowing red. "You really have to do that?" Friedrich asked.
Catriona smiled grimly. "Yep, 'fraid so," she gripped the pole tightly in the glove Elfi handed her. "Now Rachel, this is going to sting..."
The heated pole touched Rachel's skin, making her cry out in pain. "F***!" she gripped the tree and it felt like hours when Catriona finally put the heated pole down. Rachel was starting to take frequent breaths.
"Guess I should have upped the dosage on your painkiller, eh?"
Rachel just glared with seething resentment at Catriona. "That might have been a good plan, yeah."
Catriona inspected the wound, it was raw and burnt around the edges but most of the infection was gone.
"I don't want to put you through that again, so I'll bandage you up and give you something to help you sleep, okay? If it's still bad, I'll see what I can do then, but for now I think you just need to sleep," Catriona picked up the pieces of linen and started wrapping them around Rachels' shoulder. "Elfi, in my bag there's a blister sheet of sleeping pills, would you pass them to me? That should work."
Elfi passed Catriona the blister sheet and she popped out several pills and handed them to Rachel. "That should do it, just swallow them and try to make yourself comfortable," she finished tying the bandages and handed Rachel a blanket.
Rachel mumbled a thank you and shambled over to her sleeping roll. When she had trouble Friedrich pushed her gently away and undid it for her. She smiled painfully and clambered into it, not bothering to take off her shoes.
Silently Fredric pulled up the earth and sprinkled the dirt all Rachel. She sighed, "Thanks Fred." Fredric nodded his head gently and sauntered off. Rachel didn't want to close her eyes but she couldn't help it. As she dreamed terrible memories flooded her mind...
Rachel shook her mother's arm but the woman who was once lively was now unresponsive.
"Mom, wake up, Mom!" Rachel burst into hysterics when she finally realized that her mother was gone. She screamed and cried hoping that her mother would wrap her arms around her. After what seemed like hours Rachel finally called the coroners to take her mother away. Tanner was next door so Rachel didn't have to worry about him all that much.
An hour later a knock at the door signaled that what was left of only means of comfort was going into the ground. Tanner came home soon after the body was taken and Rachel was busy cleaning up.
"Rachel where's mommy?" Rachel had tears in her eyes.
"Mommy went to a better place now and all we have to is wait and see when we get to go too." Tanner's had hung low as he began o cry. Rachel waled over and hugged her brother tightly, she was about to say something comforting when her mother came limping through the door.
"Mom?" Tanner looked up.
"Mommy." The woman limped on gnashing her teeth and growling.
"Mom, what' the matter?" Rachel hugged Tanner tightly as the woman groaned and moved forward. Blood stained her night gown and dripped out of her mouth.
Rachel stayed asleep but tossed and turned, every once in awhile she would mumble Tanner's Name.
Friedrich watched Rachel toss and turn in her sleep. He couldn't help but feel bad for her. She has been like this since he first met her. Friedrich would occasionally glance back down at her to see if she needed anything, but all seemed well. He walked over to Catriona and Elfie, "Hey," His arms were crossed and he kept a sort of pissed off look on him, " I uh..." He kept fumbling his words.
" What do you want?" Catriona asked with a hint of annoyance.
" I just wanted to tell you...thanks." He had trouble saying that last word and the two girls exchanged looks, " Wait? WE didn't quite catch that?" Elfie smiled.
" Thanks for taking care of Rachel. All of us." The two looked at Friedrich like they had just seen a ghost.
" Oh my." Catriona sarcastically replied, " He actually has a heart."
" Don't get used to it." Friedrich coldly replied and squatted down next to the two, " What are you doing?" Friedrich glanced one last time at Rachel and gave a small smile.
Catriona raised her eyebrow and glanced at Elfi, who shrugged.
"We're just taking inventory, you know, trying to suss out what we have, what we need, and what we want," Catriona indicated a clipboard in Elfis' hand.
"We're only halfway through sorting our stock, but we have swabs, ointments, gauze, several types of chemicals which could possibly be harmful," Elfi paused and scrunched up her nose. "What we don't have far outweighs what we do have - if we're faced with another situation like Rachels', there won't be much we can do without the right gear."
Friedrich looked confused. "But, you fixed her arm before?"
Catriona stared at him. "We got lucky. That's it."
They all sat in silence, each with their own thoughts weighing heavily upon them. Friedrich was the first to speak. "What to you propose we do about this then?"
Catriona and Elfi glanced at each other. "We suggest a trip back into town to gather the necessary supplies," Elfi looked at her clipboard in disgust. "I'd rather it didn't have to come to this, but we're missing some crucial items."
Catriona took a deep breath. "The hospital I was working at is on the other side of town, I intend to go back there and see what I can scrounge," She sighed. "I hate to ask it, especially after you all risked your lives to save me today, but will you help me?"
Rachel woke up suddenly and heard voices talking from behind her, it took her several minutes to realize who it was. Catriona was asking Fredric if he and the group would help her retrieve some supplies at the local Hospital. Rachel smiled because she was that she now had an excuse to get the group moving.
Friedrich seemed to lose a grip of reality when Catriona mentioned the hospital. He was fine going into the city but the hospital was a different story. All of the experiences he had gone through. The pain, the misery. Then he thought about him and tightly clenched his fists. Friedrich noticed the weird looks he was getting and stopped, "Sorry." He apologised and rubbed the back of his neck embarrassingly. "Fine. We'll go." He wasted no time in standing up. At the corner of his eye Friedrich noticed that Rachel was awake, "You ok?" He asked her and looked at her wound. It seemed to be doing a bit better.
"Peachy, Just peachy." Rachel sighed and then got comfortable once more. "I'm agreeing that we should go forward and go to the Hospital, it's our best bet right now." Fredric nodded but still felt uneasy.
Catriona glared at Rachel. "You need to go back to sleep, we're not going anywhere with your arm rotting like that, you need to rest and allow it to heal."
Rachel poked her tongue out at Catriona. "Yeah, whatever," she murmured before closing her eyes.
Catriona looked questioningly up at Friedrich and asked quietly, "I don't know what your problem with the hospital is, but you have to decide whether or not you're going to be a liability to us when we get in there; we can't have you falling apart and losing your s**t like that if we're in a tight situation, you dig?"
A red tint rose high on his cheeks and glared at Catriona, "You doubt my ability to fight? I am trained for this, I can handle anything sent my way and you had better not question me again, half-pint."
Catriona narrowed her eyes and was halfway through the beginning of a retort when Rachel cut in, "Would you two shut the hell up? Some of us are trying to sleep, murder each other in your own time."
Catriona dropped her voice. "Just be sure not to let us down on the day, yeah?"
Friedrich sneered and loped away, leaving Catriona to attend to the inventory with Elfi.
(( Yay a post blaugh))
The two bickering voices quieted and Rachel was finally able to get comfortable. Wonder why Fredrick is against going to the Hospital ... It's just a supplies run .... Rachel thought to herself and was quietly drifting back into a restless sleep
Friedrich looked at the looks he was getting. He knew what they were all thinking, and he didn't like it. Friedrich rubbed his eyes after seperating from Catriona and sighed. He didn't want to be a liability, but he didn't want to go near any hospital. Friedrich wanted to show them he could handle a...small little job like this,"Fine." His voice was dark. "We can go. I'll be fine." He crossed his arms and clenched his arms.
((lol Yeah apologies on my part, year 12 is a b***h >_>wink)
Catriona shook her head disdainfully, and watched Friedrich walk away. Elfi smiled sadly at her before returning to her clipboard.
"Elfi, that's all I'm up for I think, I need to get some rest," Catriona yawned for emphasis. "I'll check on Rachel tomorrow, I don't know anything about this 'Immune' dealie so it would be good to keep an eye on her."
Elfi smiled and helped Catriona cover the supplies with a sheet to keep them clean. "I'm glad you said so, I didn't want to be the one to say anything."
Catriona chuckled and unrolled her bedroll, climbing in and laying her head on her arm her last thought was of Jasper. A tear squeezed itself out of the corner of her eye before she fell into a fitful nightmare ridden sleep.
((Sorry I haven't been in everyone. I'll be online more. This RP is the perfect speed for me with all things in my life considered right now. Highschool sucks...and then you don't die XP anyways, where should I jump in. I think I was looking for the new girl before my leave of absense.))
(( Yeah, sorry for being gone so long. LOTS of things happening. I should be on more though. I'm just moving to where I need to be in the story now. Sorry if it's too long.))
Henry exited the laboratory he was in an looked up at the sky, "Oh. How beautiful." It really wasn't the most astonishing thing, but when you're cooped up in a lab for so long, you begin to appreciate all the little things. Henry slightly smiled and put his pen and clipboard away, "I really need to get out more." He thought aloud. Just then, a helicopter was heard above. Henry frowned and took a couple of steps back. As the helicopter neard the floor, dirt and other things scattered on the ground were tossed around from the powerful wind. Henry's little bodyguard, Luke came out right on cue.
"What is the meaning of this?" Henry turned to Luke for answers.
"Well," He rubbed his hands together as he spoke, "It seems like the higher ups want you to gather some more information about the virus out in the city."
Henry was annoyed at the sudden change in plans, but nodded. He watched th helicopter land and Luke came closer, "I'll be accompanying you on this mission. Can't let a man like you out alone."
"You know me too well." Henry chuckled softly. He held up a finger, "Let me get some stuff first. When Henry was inside the building again, Luke tilted his head towards the soldiers inside the helicopter, "Um...'sup?" The men exchanged looks but remained quiet, "Yeeaahh..." Luke kicked a pebble. Henry sprinted outside, "Ready. Let's go." Luke let Henry climb into the helicopter before entering himself. The helicopter lifted off and headed to the city. Henry looked down from the side, "Hope you all are up for hell." He looked at the pistol he brought with him.
