Start naming your favorite classical waltzes plus the composers if you may. whee

I guess I'll start. Les Patineurs or the "Skater's Waltz" composed by Emilie Waldteufel.

And also Dmitri Shostakovitch's Waltz from his Jazz Suite No. 2

Waltzes are my absolute world. Thank you for this thread!

Quite seriously. I've been doing musicology research that culminated in a paper on operetta and viennese Waltzes this year.

The two you listed are gems. As far as Waldteufel is concerned, I love his "Estudiantina." It's got that gorgeous mediteranean color you'd expect from an Italian before a frenchman.

My favourite Strauss waltz is the Roses from the South Waltz. My all-time favourite Viennese Waltz, however, has got to be "Gold and Silver." Even if Andre Rieu has played it to death, Lehar was THE operetta composer of the 20th century, and captures that gorgeous fin-de-siecle elegence.

My favorite it Chopin's: Waltz in A major/minor... <333

Brahms Waltzes, opus 39! Here's 2 of my favorites -

Another couple, by Chopin -

I adore waltzes! Almost all of my favorite songs, hymns, pieces, etc., are either 3/4 or 6/8!

As a teacher, my students hear so much 4/4 on popular radio, that they have difficulties catching the feel of 3/4 - isn't that a shame!

My favourite waltz is a traditional Irish one called "Tabhair Dom Do Lamh" (means "Give Me Your Hand" wink , heres something of a recording of it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2YTVk3vK0zE&feature=related

Take a little rice, take a little beans, gonna rock n'roll down to New Orleans.

Since we don't much here about Mexican composers (and this one's a bit too easy for the trivia thread mrgreen ), what about "Over the Waves" by Juventio Rosas?

Check it on Youtube. I guarantee you've all heard it before, even if you don't recognize the name.

Chopin composed some beautiful waltzes indeed. May I suggest his Waltz in C Sharp Minor? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wN2XskfFv7w

That is a really familiar one - Thanks for letting us know who wrote it! Here's a link to it.

That's a gorgeous recording, but somehow it loses something without the tacky circus organ that made it so popular! mrgreen

I can't find a recording of it, but here's some Lehar on a Circus Organ, a waltz/polka overture to his operreta "Der Graf von Luxembourg":

I like Romeo and Juliet waltz by Prokofiev. It's pretty 3nodding

I really like Lou Harrison's "Waltz for Evelyn Hinrichsen", but it isn't posted on youtube. It's very calm, quiet, and pretty >.> but also really well done.

Well, it seems by and large a lot of the people here are Americans, and you guys have a waltz treasure in Erich Kunzel, who's been recording some fantastic waltz albums in the past years.

He was also on PBS's 4th of July concert this year, too!

Do Brahms' Liebeslieder and Neue Leibeslieder Walzer count? :3

... and all the whores and politicians will look up and shout "Save us!"

And I'll look down, and whisper "no."

Do Brahms' Liebeslieder and Neue Leibeslieder Walzer count? :3

Heck yes they do! We got to listen to some at a Valentine's day concert at my university this past february. Such gorgeous piano four hands!

I'm hoping to get to play a Brahms' Liebeslieder waltzes this next year! Hopefully it will work out.
