I'm don't really know a lot about jazz artists, since I recently got into jazz, but I have to say I love Thelonious Monk. His pieces are simply flawless.

Thelonious Monk is a great place to start if you're getting into jazz. I would also suggest Duke Ellington, Maynard Ferguson, Hann Bennink, and Herbie Hancock
