Hands down I would say piano because you have to play the melody and the acompaniment at the same time with seperate hands. And then if you're playing something like Rachamninoff their are some pretty insane chords and you have to have huge hands. I think I would say harp is in second place.

Actually I'm pretty confidant it's a tie between oboe and french horn. The french horn is really hard to play which most people don't know (actually it's listed in the world record books as the hardest instrument to play) and the oboe's pitched can be changed greatly by just moving your lips a little.

Piano's not to hard for me. And I don't really think violinist have anything to complain about.

I've never actually played a French horn.
Actually never held one, but I know some really dumb kids that play French horn.
If it really is hard, then maybe they secretly suck eek

Hm, let's see...

Well, the bassoon is incredibly difficult, due to the amount of control over their breath that the player needs to have.

The violin is very difficult to pick up after a certain age, and has very virtuoso stuff written for it (unlike a lot of instruments, due to it being a very established solo instrument).

The piano is one of very few commonly used instruments that has the ability to play melodically and harmonically all by itself, and the fact that a pianist must read two staves (or sometimes three) at one time makes it a challenge. Also, while you may say that it is no problem for you to play, Septomor, I find it a bit unlikely that anyone in this forum can play the really virtuoso stuff written for it. Unlike most classical instruments, the piano cannot go into an orchestra. Most pianists are soloists, and this means that pieces for the piano reach a very high level of difficulty (for example, the Rachmaninoff Concertos).

My conclusion is that while instruments such as the french horn, oboe and bassoon are very difficult to get started on, for the really high level stuff it's the violin and piano that are the most difficult. However, violin falls into both categories, so maybe it is the most difficult instrument.

But to play any instrument is an achievement, however "easy" it is.

I don't know how hard french horn is I'm a woodwind player and I can't buzz my lips for more than about 4 seconds. xd But I have a french horn friend and when he holds a note out it often makes an ugly trill between 3 notes and then goes lower. He's last chair so I have always assumed he wasn't very good.

Another thing that should be noted: sometimes really easy instruments are really hard to make a good sound on.
So you really couldn't say.
I just picked up trumpet, which is extremely easy, considering I learned all of the fingerings in the span of a weekend (& I'm lazy, so you know this wasn't some 48-hour dedication.), but getting it to sound good is something I'm still working on.
Whereas something like flute, is apparently slightly difficult as most of the people I know can't even make an ugly sound come out, I can make sound lovely.

So for most instruments, it's a toss-up.

& I second the last thing Le Aristocrat said.

Haha.. about a month or two ago I switched from flute to trumpet. At first my lips were always numb, haha.
Our band only has two French horns, one extremely lazy, the other extremely dedicated.
They both sound like poo.
So maybe French horn is difficult.

Yeah I just give him bonus points cuz he's cute. But I have a boyfriend so I shouldn't be talking.
Oh and it's not a classical instrument but the hardest instrument in my opinion is the fife. I've been playing for over a year and I still have to do breathing gym to sustain my notes and I've been a windplayer all my life.

Air is something I need to work on, also.
I literally turn purple when playing my trumpet.
& now I know this, because we have to have band in the choir room because they're remodeling the band room, & the choir room has two huge mirrors facing where we all are stare
I don't want to see myself play, damnit!

I can play every orchestral instrument to at least the fifth grade level (requirement for bachelor of music degree at the college I attended). French horn is tough, but if you've got a decent ear that resolves most of the problems with that instrument. Oboe is confusing because of the wealth of fingerings for so many notes, but the professor always said that making good reeds was the cure for a lot of the oboe & bassoon players problems (he'd literally kick you if you bought reeds and swore that store bought reeds were all garbage). The instrument that was the hardest was easily the violin. But, I started playing the violin as a child and it's my primary instrument. I will tell you this--in professional situations, the string players generally make more than any of the wind, brass or percussion players.

I want to play violin.. or cello.
But as of yet, I can't play any non-wind instrument.
Which sucks.

I would have to say any wind or brass instrument player has my respect!

I've played piano, harpsichord, violin, trumpet clarinet, flute and oboe in my life (at one point I was crazy and hoped to be a music teacher) and I'd have to say that the wind and brass are certainly the hardest.

With the piano, it's extremely visual (what you see is what you play) and if your instrument is tuned you don't even think about tuning as a pianist. Granted you read 2 staves of music but it's completely tactile.

With strings, winds and brass there's an intangible element of TUNING that beginners must master in addition to just reading music and playing the instrument. It's not like you an turn a peg or push a valve down and suddenly your violin or trumpet is in tune. You need to think about placement and embouchure as well.

That just covers the basic function of the instrument. Just because you can hold it in your hands and make noise on it doesn't mean you can play it artistically and beautifully. Sadly, for most of the instruments I learned I was just making noise... rofl

@LA: I'd hate to argue, but my point for french horn being the harder than piano is coming from the fact that to play a piano, all you have to do is hit a key with your finger. But for horn, you have to use a vast amount of air.

Besides that, organ is harder than piano when you have to use your feet as well.

lol, you classical musicians >.> the hardest instrument to play is the uilleann pipes XD you have to pump air with the bellows while keeping the flow of air constant while playing the melody and pressing with the side of your hands on the regulators. theres a reason people say they take 7 years to learn, 7 years to practice and a further 7 playing in order to call yourself a master piper razz
