So May Festival is coming up for our Adv. Band. 89th year.

I am the lead flutist in our band.

My band director hates both of these songs, but honestly I love playing them.

Opinions/comments on these songs?

I play in an orchestra so I don't know what the difference in hardness, but I played both songs before and my personal opinion I think country gardens is a lot simpler than Pachebel's Canon but if you want to make an audience dumbfounded then you should play Pachebel's Canon.

Country Gardens is one of the greatest pieces of wind ensemble repertoire ever written (plus the version I played began with a sweet flute duet!) Pachelbel's Canon is one of those pieces that everyone knows and has probably played at some point. They're both wonderful pieces in my opinion, though I would say that Country Gardens is probably a tad bit more difficult. It's really a shame that your band director doesn't like them!

I've been playing the flute for about 7 years, so the arrangements we have are both pretty simple (in my opinion), but the younger students in my band have trouble with most songs we play. I am one of the few in my band that loves both songs. Oh, and we're playing both. We play them while the arch dancers do their little thing.

Thank you for your input :D

Percy Grainger was a musical genius. (: And there's sort of a flute duet thing, between me and a girl who only plays it because no one else is brave enough (our band is full of cowards). Pachelbel's Canon is such a lovely classic. I think he just doesn't like them because we've had the same arrangement for 89 years, and it's his 16th year teaching here.
