I've loved Callas for a year now...but my voice teacher recently sent me some stuff by Montserrat Caballe...and I think she might be greater. I heard that Callas looked up to her...so maybe she is?

I guess there really is no one greatest singer...there are so many different voices its impossible to choose.

Uh oh, be very careful! You might start a war between the Callas and and Tibaldi fans wink I will check out Monserat Caballe. I L-O-V-E Callas but there are certain arias which are better suited for different voices. I enjoy going on youtube and checking out all of the different versions of the same song to see which version is best. I am not sure there is one universally superior singer but there are many who are superb. Do you have a favorite aria? I love Callas' rendition of un bel di vedremo, and well pretty much anything else from Puccini. I also love the gypsy song and habenara from Carmen.

Yeah, no one sang "O mio babbino Caro" quite like Tibaldi.

I am so sick of that song now, seriously.
i never believed it was possible to over sing an aria but im thinking its quite a plausible idea now. but yes *swoons* puccini puccini.
i spose it depends on the tonal qualities you think suits a piece best.
i like singing in a rich tone, but not heavy. i HATE airy fairy voices, but i must admit, put with the right piece of music they can have an incredible effect.
i also prefer to admire pieces rather than singers in general, as might be evident in my last sentence :s

I agree with you, but there is nothing worse than hearing one of your favorite peices butchered scream I become very attached to certain peices and have to find exactly the right version because the music should be allowed to flourish. I prefer a rich tone but sometimes a lighter voice can be fun as long as you are not expecting a classical or traditional performance. Who are some of your favorite performers? Yes, the peices are paramount but when sung improperly or by someone ill-suited, the works are generally a frusterating disappointment.

I love Callas singing its as though the angels themselves are singing through her.
