I don't know where the heck to put this thread. I hope it's the right place.

So, I really want to see an opera for my 18th birthday. I was wondering if anyone would be willing to suggest some good ones. I've already seen Carmen, and The Phantom of the Opera.
Been thinking about Lakmé and Lucia di Lammermoor.

And feel free to discuss. Thanks. (:
I'm not exactly an expert on operas, but every song I've ever heard from Lucia di Lammermoor has been wonderful.
I'd also recommend Puccini's "Gianni Schicchi," which has the famous song "O Mio Babbino Caro." I don't know if that'll be playing anytime around your birthday, but if all else fails, go for Lucia. :D
Unfortunately, I don't really know any songs from Lakme (excuse my lack of accented letters), but now I have some new opera material to look up. Good luck finding a good opera to attend!

I agree. The music I've heard from Lucia di Lammermoor are all beautiful. I haven't heard much of Lakmé, but I do know of this famous song, if you're interested in listening:

I just love love love that song. I'm sure the opera would be worth going to even if that song is the only thing good about it. ha ha
I'll defiantly look into Gianni Schicchi. Thanks a lot.

Oh my gosh, I definitely know that aria! I guess I never knew which opera it was from. :D
But yes, Gianni Schicchi has some very emotional pieces. However, the lyrics themselves are actually pretty bland, hahaha. At least the arrangements are beautiful!

Who knows? Maybe you'll find a great opera you've never heard of that's playing nearby! How soon is your birthday?

I know, it's a pretty recognizable piece. I didn't know which opera it was from either until recently. I've still got exactly three months and one day to go. So I have plenty of time to do some research and prepare. (:
I love Puccini as much as the next person, and The Jewel Song from Lakme is a real clackatura piece, but why not start with some Mozart? Die Zauberflote (The Magic Flute) though actually a singspiel --has some spoken dialogue-- is great and has probably one of the most famous arias ever...Der Holle Rache sung by the Konigen der Nacht (Queen of the Night) or you could watch some comedic opera and see The Marriage of Figarro. This opera is very funny (has a pants role) and you are more than likely to recognize several arias and duets. Just some suggestions.

Thanks for the suggestions.
akhnaten and doctor atomic are my favorite operas
Lucia di Lammermoor I have both love and hate for - the climactic third act is pure perfection. The love duet in act one though, I have heard with many performers including people at the top of their careers... and I just cannot stand the sound of it. Act II's not much better for me.

If you have an opportunity to see Lakme, I'd say go for it, if only for the reason that it's definitely not as commonly-performed.

My personal favorite is to see the whole of Puccini's "Il Trittico," tied with Berg's "Lulu"

Best I've seen by far was Marriage of Figaro.

Comedy involved, absolute laugh & musical genious.

well like just because the best you've seen by far was that crummy thing
I really enjoyed Puccini's Tosca.
It has love, plotting, murder, and all set to a beautiful musical score.
