As far as her voice goes, I'm not impressed, I never was. But i'm a huge fan regardless. Her music is fantastic! Unlaced is probably some of her greatest work, as well as the odd harpsichord bits on Opheliac.

I could not agree more. My friend introduced me to her this year, and I am not crazy about her voice, but I absolutely love how she plays her violin; it is so inspiring to me, and I hope that I may someday be able to be as effortless-seeming as her when it comes to playing it. "Unlaced" was the first song of hers that I was introduced to, and I must admit that I am in love with that song. She is very talented when it comes to her instruments, and I enjoy the harpsichord, as well.

A good comparison would be with the Cello lead band Rasputina, who was doing far similar things before Emilie had gotten around to the underground scene.

I recommend running an experiment: Visit a board dedicated to classical music such as http://www.good-music-guide.com/community/ and ask what people think of her. Post a link to the thread and responses here. I also recommend joining the place because it is an excellent (and active!) forum for discussion of classical music based on my past experience there. Most of the members are musicians, man professional, and some are composers. I was in the minority as a layman when I was there. In any case, I haven't been a regular for a few years, but it was a pretty nice place back in the day.

I never claimed that most of her fan base is composed of classical musicians, I believe I made reference to the bit of her fanbase that are classical musicians in my little rant. I'm not expressing anyones opinion aside from the classical musicians that i've met on her official forum. I'm sure there are classical musicians who find her shredolin absolutely terrible and her image aweful. I myself find it fantastic.

you seem to think that making money is a sign of talent then by that assessment we can go ahead and say someone like lady gaga or kanye west or justin bieber are leaps and bounds more talented than anything you or i listen to.

getting paid to make music isnt a sign of anything aside from wanting to sell you're "talent" to people and make a living doing something absolutely anyone who wanted to do that could make for free as a hobby.

music is supposed to be an art form before it is a business.

my point is that these bands like you've mentioned and even the ones i've mentioned aside from maybe sleepy are all musical and theatrical hacks.

if i were to compare it to food it would be having someone who has eaten well and heathily for a long time and then handing them a mcdouble.

and the fact that they can play their instruments means nothing if the s**t their playing is cheesy and or put on.

music that has any merit doesnt fall into the trappings of making song songs,getting signed, and playing sold out shows,all that shows is that you can sell yourself like any good business person.

that doesnt make you an artist.
