Good modern pianist: Hiromi Uehara.

She explores classical, jazz, rock, and modern genres.

She's worth looking up.

Shall we set out, across this sea of faces?

Firebird Suite.

In search of more, and more, applause?

"Bach Cello Suite" is my favorite piece to listen to.
Paganinis 24 caprices.. And vivaladis four seasons biggrin
Steve Reich... particularly "Different Trains".

I've been hooked on this guy's compositions recently.
Shostakovich Viola Sonata in C, Lizst Piano Concerto in B minor, and the Bach Cello Suites (played on either viola or cello)
I'm going to a certain music school in New York, so I think I can give you some recommendations hahah.

Verdi's Requiem, especially mvmt. two, the Dies Irae. It's intense.

Tchaikovsky's 4th symphony

Shostakovich's 6th symphony

Stravinsky's Firebird

Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique

Lutoslawski's Mala Suita

In that order. A personal bass solo I'm fond of is the Eccles Sonata in Gminor.

If you want more, I can go down my list on my iTunes hahah.

Really, any Tchaik, Shosty, Mozart (Magic Flute overture!!!), or Brahms, I'm huge fans.
My favorite pieces (and pieces which I can play) are;
Mendelssohn violin concerto op.64 in e minor
Sibelius violin concerto op.47 in d minor
Beethoven violin concerto
Vivaldi four seasons (all of them =D)
Handel-Halvorsen Passacaglia
Paganini Caprice # 5,9,13,20,21,24
Bazzini La Ronde de Lutins
Bach's Chaconne
Sibelius Voces Intimae
Rimsky-Korsakov Cappricio Espagnol
Handel's Concerto Grosso 10
Handel's Queen of Sheba
The Carmen Suite
Bach's concerto for two violins
Vivaldi's concerto for 4 violins
enjoy heart
