Welcome to Gaia! ::

I've recently come across this sub-genre known as Death Jazz.

I've tried to research it on my own, but the most I get out of it is it's basically a somewhat fusion of Death Metal and Jazz, mainly for the improvisation.

But it's pretty much it.
If anyone knows more about this, feel free to enlighten me.

i don't think this is a real thing

somebody's misleading you about either a metal group or a jazz group

nope

you might be thinking of a free jazz or jazzcore group or something

or it's some kind of metal
If you're thinking of bands like Athiest, it's metal.

Where did you find this out?

I say this because I remember reading a huge and hilarious thread in which the OP was trying to convince a forum of jazz fans that jazz would be better if it were more like metal. I've never heard of 'death jazz' outside that.
It is indeed a sub-genre of sorts:

Like you, I've scoured the internet in an attempt to research independently. Due to it's very nature however, it has avoided the usual academic type-up that almost everything else musical has gone through. Thus your best bet to understanding it is to listen to it.
