Have you ever had someone tell you how well you write a character? I never expected someone to tell me that they thought my favorite ship almost seemed canon because of the way I wrote them in the fic.
Well, I haven't written any fanfictions, but I frequently role-play and I've been told at least once that the way I write them makes it seem canon. Also, I try to fill in the gaps of the actual story from the comics/games so it would fit perfectly if it were actually canon! I think it's a wonderful compliment to hear and it always makes me feel so warm and fuzzy inside!

Yep, a couple of people told me that my DBZ fanfic was good enough to seem like canon. But, it's DBZ, it's really not that hard to write the characters properly, especially in a short one shot.

I've also been told on both the DBZ and a Furuba story that I captured the feel of the series. I take it as a major complement.

Well, share! Which character/s do you have nailed down? I've got a first-person DBZ fic I'm immersed in right now, and my beta-reader told me I really got inside Vegeta's head. (She's an irl friend, so I'm not sure what her opinion's worth, but yes, it does feel great when you try really hard and someone notices!)

I've done past and present tense for One Piece fanfiction, mostly Sanji and Usopp. But even characters that I've only written once or twice I seem to have good control over, like Brook. : )

I've had the creator of one of the series I was writing fanfiction of indicate that they like it? It's ongoing, and they're still subscribed.
That is hard to say. I will make some things try to feel cannon but then I try to make some other things not feel cannon intentionally, depending on the story and situation. When I try to make things seem canon, I would like to say they do. But if they do not, then I would like to say that is the desired result.

^ This. Love the series but its not all that challenging to write it sounding legit.

I've never gotten that compliment before... however whenever i write they are extreaimily inaccurate
I've never gotten the compliment before, but this fic I'm currently reading takes place after the events of a movie, and the fic is just so well-written and true to the characters, it almost feels like it's canon or that it's an actual sequel to the movie.

I love when you get to experience that sort of fic. smile

I just recently got a comment on my Star Trek fanfiction that they thought I had the characterization just perfect on the characters I was working with.

I was so happy to hear it, I was really worried.

I've gotten a number of comments like that on a few stories (all from different fandoms, too). I think its not so much that I'm able to keep the character in-character so much as I write them well enough that readers don't really notice that they're out of character. Reading over my own work I'm always saying to myself, "I made this character seem to tempered, in the series he's more angry and volatile" or "this character seems to smart, in the show he was much dumber".

If you portray the characters in a way that is pleasing to the reader then they will be perceived as 'in-character' because that's the way the reader WANTS to perceive them.

I could not find Aha's original post in this thread to tip. So, Nymph, you get the tip instead.

Its so true. So, so, true.
Yeah, I write for a fandom where most people love a pairing that's mostly canon; we don't like how it's only very heavily implied and not actually canon. I mostly write that pairing, and I've been told a few times that after reading my fic that the reader thought it was real, and wished it could happen. I was really excited about it, and a little unnerved!
Oh, and here's something for you: It's a huge compliment, being told that you wrote it so well! Congrats!
