Forgive me, but that sounds circular to me. X books are about what Wicca really is -> Why are these other books invalid? -> Because they aren't about actual Wicca -> What is Wicca 'actually' about -> What X books say Wicca is about.
The religion you find in books about Wicca is great but it's not Wicca. You can not learn the rites and rituals of Wicca from a book. Wicca is not an earth based religion. Wicca is:

  • Wica is an oathbound tradition- that is to say, the Wica swear oaths to defend and uphold the tradition and protect it.

  • Wica is a Experiential. That means that it as a religion is less about what you read and more about how being part of the cult and participating therein effects you.

  • Wica is a Mystery Cult. There are secrets, in both gnosis and informative forms, that are not revealed to the uninitiated.

  • Wica is Orthopraxic. It isn't about what you believe, but how you do things. This is of course in place to preserve the Experiential Mystery elements.

  • Wica is made completely of Clergy. This means that all the Wica are priests and priestesses.

  • Wica is an initiatory religion. This means that for you to be part of it, you have to be inducted ritualistically by other members of the Wica. This again preserves the Oathbound, Experiential Mystery dynamic.

If some one doesn't meet those requirements what that person practices is not Wicca. It might be a very fulfilling religion but it is not Wicca.

You could call an apple an orange and it would work, assuming the people you are communicating with understand what you mean.
By they are two totally different fruit. The same goes for the religion of Wicca and Neo-Wicca. They are completely different. One is an oath bound mystery fertility cult of the Lord and Lady of the Isles. The other is an earth/nature based religion

. I mean, language evolves and the meaning of words change. Which is exactly what I see with Wicca.
If a word introduced has a specific meaning then that is the meaning of the word. Gardner named his religion Wicca. Thus Wicca refers only to his religion. It's not like I can worship Satan and call myself a Christian. If you don't meet the tenants of a religion then you are not of that religion. I don't know how much clearer I can be.
jesus, this is already ten pages in. I'm not sure why I'm posting stare Unfourtnatly "real wiccans" are so focused on the lineage and all that bullshit that they forget about the important things. I chose to think about what I belive and support rather than what I call myself. Today Wicca is so full of elitist bullshit it's suffocating.

If you don't meet the requirements of a religion, why would you call yourself a member of that religion? It's not that other witchcults are viewed as less than Wicca. Certainly not. It's more that the Wica swear oaths to uphold and defend their craft, which means making sure people that aren't Wiccan don't call them selves Wiccan.

bull. end of story.
It's not bull. The religion was founded to be practiced a specific way. If you don't practice the rites the right way they are not Wiccan. Wiccan lore and doctorine state that the rites and rituals need to be performed a specific way. Only those who have been initiated know the proper way of performing those rites. It is the rites and rituals and how you worship that make you Wiccan, not what you believe.

-shakes head- poor poor thing you. You're missing out on something quite magical. Wicca certainly has attracted a bunch of idiots, no offence. I hate gardner and this epic pile of s**t he's spewed out into the world. rolleyes

Here's a better example. Would you call yourself a Catholic priest if all you've done is read books about Catholicism and not gone to a seminary?
Sevashtyn
Whether you follow Wicca as a solitary practitioner or as a member of a coven is entirely up to you. There are debates about which one is 'right', but quite frankly those people need to get the sticks out of their asses. Some people, like myself, don't live in areas that allow for practicing in a group and so are forced to act as solitary practitioners. You can initiate yourself into the Craft once you feel that you have achieved that level of study and dedication to it. Others simply prefer to be a part of a community that shares the same basic beliefs. The real questions here are:

A. Is there a coven, or a group in your area that you are able to meet with?

B. Which do you feel more comfortable with?

sounds like good advice

You can't say that as you don't know what I believe and practice. I am an eclectic neo-pagan and was for a long time a seeker of Wicca. I belong to no specific tradition at the moment, but start training in the Temple of Witchcraft Tradition this Fall.

Oh, that's how it works now?

You're wrong. I don't need to prove this.

Right and how am I ignorant? Just because I don't fall in to the appeal to popularity I'm ignorant? I've had this discussion with lineaged Wiccans. I had my a** ******** handed to me for calling myself Wiccan when I couldn't answer the questions asked of me that any initiate would know. I've been around the block a few times. I know what I'm talking about.

As some one who was a seeker of Wicca for a long time I find it offensive that people continue to use the term Wiccan when they do not even know the names of the deities worshiped in Wicca. How can you follow a religion and not know the names of the Gods you worship?
