Welcome to Gaia! ::

Because by definition a marriage is the union between a man and a woman. If they change the definition of this word, what other words will they change next? Communication will break down and everything becomes ambiguous. Look at the Tower of Babel. They couldn't communicate with each other and an entire nation of people was scattered.

Don't be selfish. Think of the greater good of society, if you intend to stay with the society you're familiar with.

EDIT: This used to be on ED, but some oversensitive p***k decided to report this and now it's here. Shame on you, oversensitive p***k, for shunning progress and the pursuit of truth.

Can I rape you? If you say yes it won't be rape. But if you say no, it will be. But...it would be rude not to ask.

"Don't be selfish"?

You can honestly say that with a straight face and not give gays the same rights? It would have absolutely no effect on you, it would do NOTHING to effect normal marriages. This isn't a case of "they want to get married for the word married" it's a case of giving domestic partnerships the same rights as marriage which they don't have at this point (ie seeing each other in the hospital, benefiting from the certain health insurance policies for married couples, filing under the same tax return, etc).
So the question stands if this has 0 effect on same sex marriage then where is the harm in it? Banning it for no other reasons than it not matching your own moral beliefs is just plain stupid especially when it clearly violates equality under protection of the constitution.

1) Lexicon changes over time anyway. I assure you that when you use words such as "Vandals" you surely are not referring to the German tribe that sacked Rome centuries ago.

2) Marriage is a social construct. It can be defined as wished by the Government or the people within a society/community.

3) The Tower of Babel is a Biblical tale and most likely did not occur. If we're talking about the origin of languages, it can be safely assumed that language primarily came about as humans populated the Earth, separated in their own ways, and formed their own version of language in order to communicate rather than some kind of supernatural event in which God cursed everyone to be unable to speak the same language.

4) What advantage is there of having "heterosexual only" marriage? Homosexuals will stay homosexuals and it's not as if they're going to act differently than if they were barred from marriage. Also, it's not as if heterosexuals will lose anything by having homosexuals marry. It's not as if heterosexuals will all of a sudden get homosexually married. Unless they do, in which that's their choice.

Which is why I said nothing of moral beliefs or standards. I'm talking about the breaking down of language and communication. We wouldn't want that now, would we?

Here's the thing, chumley; I don't plan to stay with this society. I don't believe in staying where I'm not wanted.

I invite you to ponder who created this definition in the first place. Marriage (both heterosexual AND homosexual) was around in the Roman Empire before Christianity came along.

You're tumbling down a poorly constructed slippery slope.

Why should I care what some storybook says about a building that may or may not have existed?

Who's being selfish, here? And would benefit would be wrought by disallowing sex-same marriage?

Your using a piss poor excuse fueled by illogical paranoia to deny someone basic rights.
Do you realize that by denying it they're therefore contradicting the constitution? Thereby doing exactly what your saying the reason is that they cant change it? Amendments are made for a reason, else wise we'd still have slave owners, women that couldn't vote or own property amongst many other rights being hypocritically denied.

Oh but society is beginning to fall apart. Here's an example of a simple almost common day phrase. "I love you." That is seen as a social taboo now. You hear about finding the right time to say it to someone or else they might be scared away or misinterpret. And why's that? Because of another word in the language which I'll get to in a moment. When we say love, we think of marriage, especially if it's a romantic love between unrelated individuals (unless you're into incest). And with marriage, traditionally one would also think of sex. And here comes the other naughty word. When we think of sex, we think of the f word. So when a person says "I love you" there's a hint of "F- you!" in there, and that's why people get turned off and scared away. So don't think for a second that language doesn't severely impact society.

Unless you plan to be a hermit. Then you have your own discourse community, in which case any word can mean anything to yourself.

The following countries have legalized same sex marriage:

Belgium
Canada
Netherlands
Norway
South Africa
Spain
Sweden

none of them seem to have fallen

I was unaware that there was such an indication. Could you prove that the majority of people think this way or any significant evidence of the matter?

Canada is a joke. I know from a life-time of experience.

No, I plan to move to a place where any legislation that's actually in my favor isn't a kiss of death.
