Who the f-ck cares what it's called when same sex couples find a partner. It's silly to get stuck up on it, if someone's against same sex couples, they aren't going to become any more tolerant if the partnership of gays is called 'marriage' or not, and the gays shouldn't give a fudge and should be glad they've got a partner.

It isn't progressive to argue about this sh-t. We all understand what marriage is. Let's focus on something IMPORTANT.
Hopefully discrimination for sexual orientation/gender identity becoming illegal would follow legal gay marriage. To have gay marriage be legal would also be social acceptance. It's much more than just being able to sign a marriage contract. rolleyes

That's not really something a law will change. Racism is still pretty rampant.
But not as much as it used to be. We can only strive for betterment, not perfection.

And I'm all for betterment of society. It's the opposite that I'm concerned with, and that's what this thread is about.

This has only been around for a few years in most countries. Throw in the Internet and their languages will steadily go down the drains.

You do know that language changes... all the time, right?

well, except for French. They literally have some language police.

Have you ever read any Shakespeare? The words mean so many different things than they do now. And marriage isn't the same thing in every culture, even though the word may translate the same. What about countries with multiple wives?

That's new to me, and I think that's absolutely brilliant. Language doesn't always change for the better. Look at the Interwebs. You're = your, there = their = they're, it's all a mess. Sooner or later they'll just keep one of those and everything will become ambiguous.

Same deal. I've already said earlier that I'm not against people hooking up. I'm against people changing the meanings of words.

Yeah that's not how it works. it just took the French a hell of a long time to adapt to things like the internet. Well, longer than it should have.

And anyway, weather or not the change is good or bad is beside the point. You implied that ALL change was bad, but change happens all the time and guess what? We still have a language.

Those are not an example of language change, but laziness. Language change would be, sticking to the internet, are pwnz, l33t, lol, imo, and newb.

Think of the greater good of society, if you intend to stay with the society you're familiar with.

Change is good for a society. If we never had change we would never advance in life. Besides there is more to mirage than just a union between two people. There is a lot of political crap that is involved and gays just want the same rights. If you ask me it's closed minded stuff like this that hold the potential of people back.

Because by definition a marriage is the union between a man and a woman. If they change the definition of this word, what other words will they change next?

You speak like it hasn't happened before or something.

Besides, Webster Online's already changed the definition to include same-sex marriage. You're too late on this horse.

That's coined jargon. Something more familiar might be the various ways in which "cool" and "hot" can be almost synonomous.
Eg.
Mary: There goes a cool dude.
Jill: Yeah, he's totally hot.

I think Gays should be aloud to join, but not technically marry under God.
