Explain to me how it's not.
Alright let me do this as I literally haven't heard this song in a long time.
I'm going to listen to it once without lyrics then with lyrics.
First issue: Guitar is upbeat.
Second issue: Bells in the background.
Third: Dragging out the singing isn't exactly depressing.
Fourth: It feels like it lacks any raw emotion.
Fifth: ******** bells.
Sixth: First buildup is what the ********.
Seventh: Focus on the violin and ignore that guitar/bells for that "emotional" part
Eighth: Stop cheapening the violin.
Ninth: Violin goes "happy"
Tenth: Really dull buildup with no emotion.
Eleventh: The guitar is really really really unpleasant.
Twelve: The "sad" parts are done so poorly that it makes me upset
Thirteen: The crescendo is pbb
Fourteen: I'm supposed to be ignoring the lyrics but all I hear is killer
Alright. Now to move on to the lyrics.

Fourth: Bad wailing
Fifth: I used to be a little boy so old in my shoes? What the ********?
Six: What I choose is my choice
Seventh: What's a boy supposed to do

Ok I paused because I have serious issues already.

Lyrics don't really mean as much what they are but what you think they are and even then I still hear the same thing.
Nine: Leave you like they left me here?
Ten: The bitterness of one whos left alone?
Eleven: I send this smile to you?
What the ********?
The song feels like it doesn't have anything honest or raw to it and instead is left will a whole bunch of random emotions and feelings thrown together without any coherency or actual thought process. While the violin could be a star in this and crescendo used properly they cheapen it with a different change of sound and adding bells to it makes it even worse.
Ignoring the fact that the song is a measly 3 minutes long it feels rushed and like it just wants to get this over with.
First off, I'm just gonna state that there is a difference between a sad song and a depressing song. Depression isn't just extreme sadness and sad all the time.
The lyrics so old in my shoes is talking about being without a real childhood. Being too mature for his age. Knowing more than a boy his age should.
"what I choose is my choice. What's a boy supposed to do" reflects internal conflict.
The missing crescendo makes it feel empty, yes? That empty feeling is intended.

And those CHIMES you hear are often used in sad or powerful music. That, or marches. Charms are rarely used in joyous songs.
And the whole lack of raw emotions leaves the meaning up to speculation. A common tool used by many artists, that way each listener can draw whatever they want from it, so it appeals to a broader audience.
All in all, I guess it depends on the literary lens that you view it through. You view it as happy, which I'm sure many people do. I don't.

Sure. Obviously personal influence plays a part in this.
Depression should have more than just sadness. Being alone, lacking hope and all of the sort are other great ways to convey it.

A. What I choose is my choice is a very vapid and stupid line.
B. Lets say that it represents internal conflict. Why bring it up right there? You were talking about feeling old at such a young age. Assumed this is forced maturity and still we're having issues with this line. I can see it as internal conflict but juxtaposed with the previous and it loses all meaning and worth.

No.
It almost reaches the crescendo. In music it's a valid use of building something up to have a hollow afterpoint but it doesn't do that. It doesn't reflect or take time.

Except they're not used right. They bring an air of dissonance and uncomfortably.

So lets say they leave out "raw emotion" to bring in an audience.
Iirc smashing pumpkins have had a few tracks described as having "raw emotion" that were featured in top slots.
So why would they drop it now?
