I think you've got your wires crossed a little bit on the "arranged marriage" bit.
Either that, or I've read a lot of wrong stuff on Japanese culture.[Not saying you are japanese, but hear me out.]
What you are describing, and the title you are giving it, don't sound like the same thing.
Classically, an Arranged Marriage was something done way back in less sophisticated times, mostly between royal families, to keep blood-lines strong through forced marriages.
Heck, back in those times, a wife could even be put to the block for not allowing the husband consumation rights on their wedding night.X_X
Many of these Arranged[forced] Marriages were done as cunning political moves, to strengthen ties and beat out a political rival for someone's favor.
Now, what you are describing, and I hope to God I've got this spelled right cause my grasp of Japanese is still very raw, is an O-miai.
It works exactly as you described, where parents will set up blind dates for their kids to see if they can make something work.
A small difference, which you may or may not have done, is that over in Japan, they'll sometimes bring over entire portfolios of pictures and bios of potential partners for their kids to pick and choose from before agreeing to the date.
And to add on a brief note; anyone who thinks less of you just because your a virgin, is a 100% Grade-A MORON, and isn't worth your time. 3nodding
Oh, and this is coming from a non-virgin, btw.^_-

The western idea of political arranged marriage is very different from the eastern idea of modern arranged marriage. Its still very common in India (not sure of a percentage, anyone know?), especially in traditionally run families. Its very similar to the Japanese method you were speaking of.
My anthropology class discussed this article together in comparison to a few others, and I'm really glad I could find it. smile
