My petty officers in bootcamp found out we werent drinking enough water, he had us all line up with full canteens and drink till they were empty. than hold it over own heads to prove so.

that sucked. forced hydration sucked!

I know that feeling. Just before I was discharged (back in June), I ran into a soldier in the DFAC whose last name was literally "Drinkwater". I thought it was a joke - but I was wrong...

That's not necessarily true; you only have a few millennia of human existence on which to base that statement. Humanity is very young as a race, and it isn't improbable to think that one day that instinct will become obsolete.
