Maybe, M, if you wish upon a star and hope.

Reason Number Something Else That Pisses Me Off - Advice vs. Advise I love the titles of thread that go, "I need some advise!" and then goes to say that they're a pretty decent writer. Okay, little grammar lesson kiddies!
ADVICE (noun): a useful tip, a helpful suggestion
ADVISE (verb): to give advice
Please, get it right. It makes me cringe and wonder if the value of English education is really on a steep decline.

NO WAY! She should be smacked with a hardback edition of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix!

((How about a hardback encyclopaedia volume? I have that handy. XD.))

I don't know, the Order of the Phoenix may do more damage... Have you seen how thick that thing is?

And Astrid, where do you get those things? They're hysterical!

Order of the Phoenix would not work as well as an encyclopedia volume by sheer right of it being printed with lighter paper than an encyclopedia volume. Also, the book size is smaller, and if you altered the dimensions of Order of the Phoenix to the size of an encyclopedia volume (at least the ones I ran into are taller and wider), it would probably be a thinner book.
Good point. An encyclopedia it is.

Reason four! - Talking about books--READ THE DAMN STICKIES BEFORE POSTING! The little subtitle thing under the Writer's Forum link is a little misleading. It basically says, "Discuss all things literary." If you read the stickies, you'd (you referring to the misplaced Gaian) know that there is a separate Book subforum in the Entertainment Forum. Why can't you read the sticky before posting? If you did, you wouldn't get some replies that may be considered flames. SO READ THE STICKIES. And don't come to us with Eragon or Twilight talk. Generally, the frequenters (that's not a word, I think) of the WF hate Paolini and Meyer.

[EDIT] It turns out that threads about Stephenie Meyer and the Twilight series and Harry Potter are all repeat threads in the Book fourm and go to the Recycling Bin.

well that just sux for you, doesn't it?! stop bitching.
don't u ppl have anything better to do?

You obviously don't know me, and you may or may not fail to understand the point of this thread. In regards to the former, bitching is part of my personality. It's hard to work out that kink after sixteen years of non-stop bitching. In regards to the latter, the point of this thread is to tell people in a PMS-y tone the do's and don't's of the WF--what to post and what not to post. It's basically a place to rant and vent for those who frequent this forum and get pissed off by people not reading the rules of the stickies and just being plain ignorant.

Now take this and shove it up your a**.

And thanks for singling me out. I consider that an act of racism.

Haha, wow, oh wow. That was some good stuff. Good stuff.
I commend the person that made this thread and the people that have contributed.
Good stuff...

*inspired from the recent "romance without smut" thread*

Reason Number Romance =/= Smut: Romance is an evolving loving relationship explored between two characters. Smut is [usually pointless] sex that usually does not further the plot.

Indeed, and furthermore, a story actually having sex in it doesn't make it smut either.

I remember one of my friends staring over my shoulder and going "EWW! Nem's writing PORN!" just as I was getting to the sex scene. It wasn't even a particularly graphic one either, I think I'd handled it reasonably tasteful (I'd kept all of my immaturity in check that day, hur hur), and it was a part of the story that, given the characters, I just knew was gonna happen sooner or later.

I think it all boils down to people having too black-and-white a view of things. If your story isn't puritanically free of sexual suggestion, then it's "smutty". I hate the all-or-nothing attitude of some people.

This is why I clarified it as pointless sex that does nothing for the plot, since I know sometimes people actually use sex as a decent writing tool rather than a fantasy fulfillment.

Whenever you are done with the current story I sent you, I can show you an (unfinished) piece just before a fade to black (I got stuck on the last bit of conversation. -_- I had it when I started, but it was gone by the time I got there). Personally, I find character conversations and interactions much more thrilling and exciting than the actual sex.

Of course. I wasn't doubting your understanding of what smut was and wasn't, just the general black-and-white view. (It's like the black-and-white, damned-if-you-do-damned-if-you-don't attitude too many teenagers have to face growing up - namely that if you have sex you're a slut, but if you don't, then you're cold and frigid...the two extremes being the only two things that exist. Such an attitude can often be pretty harmful to someone growing up.)

Sure thing, and so do I. Character interactions give you more of an opportunity to examine some character development and personality. That's not to say that sex scenes don't, but other interactions seem to allow so much more opportunity for it.

I'd send you one of mine too. At my current point, there have been two 'fade-to-black' moments.

Out of interest, how late do you usually leave it in the scene before you 'fade'?

If there is conversation, I will try to end it, but the most I ever dared to go (not in a story, but somewhere in my notes) was a couple kissing, one pushing the other back, and then shortly after the fade. My characters only ever go as far as "about to do it," they never "start to do it."

I then come back at the aftermath, like when both are dressed, or (in one case) one partner is sleeping while the other is still awake and pondering something. And as dark as my stories get, I have a strange addiction to "cute," so my couples may do things like talk sweetly to each other, one will hold the other (usually a husband with a sleeping wife against him. Because I find it adorable), and if (by context of the aftermath conversation) it got awkward or painful, there may be words of comfort, etc.

@Firelodge: I find these images on photobucket.com
@Nightmare1: I see, that makes sense now. Encyclopedia wins!
