Sadly, I think it's one of the most overrated movies ever. I heard all the hype, then I watched it and I remember thinking "Um, that's it? Really?"

It's a good film, but overrated (and not obscure or independent). It's philosophy isn't completely explored and as such some of the arguments it tries to make come off as being disjointed or overly pretentious. Plus, it took most of it's themes, philosophical arguments, and visual cues from "Ghost in the Shell" which, in turn, provided a more complete examination and overview of those elements.

To the Wachowski Brothers' credit, they tried to create a sci-fi kung fu adventure with deep philosophical leanings and the fact that they came as close as they did to succeeding is still pretty impressive.
