Depending on the type of piercing you want, you may have a harder time finding a job. What type of piercing do you want?

Tattoos - cons: If you get them at a young age when you grow or get fat they will stretch and be ruined.
pros- If you do everything right the tattoo can look nice.

Just to name some basics...

Piercing Pros:
You can take them out if you need to after they heal
They accent pretty much any outfit
They are cheaper than tattoos
You can wear different jewelry

Piercing Cons:
They can get infected which can cause a lot of problems
You can't wear them in a lot of situations (work, "professional" environments, etc)

Tattoo Pros:
You can customize your idea
You have endless options
They can be hidden if you place them well
They're bold and eye-catching
They can hold a spiritual meaning

Tattoo Cons:
They are permanent
They hurt, bleed a lot when you get them, scab when they're healing, and can get infected
You may regret your design/placement later on
Many jobs do not allow tattoos (if yours are visible)
They can look bad when you age or gain/lose a lot of weight

I'm not getting any tattoos on my torso until after my chest reconstructive surgery is performed. Because the skin stretching/contracting could displace or distort a tattoo.

If you're self-conscious though, it's probably a BAD idea to be putting metal in your body, so hundreds of people can stare and give you nasty comments. XD;;

It depends on how you do it. The more extreme, the more offended people get, I think.

Piercings are nice because if you dislike them or need to get rid of them, you usually can, and they'll close up and not be noticeable. They can get some ugly scarring though, even if taken care of properly. They tend to be cheaper and more in and out than tattoos, but they have a longer healing time.

Tattoos are permanent, but you're given a lot more artistic and creative license. They tend to be more expensive and time consuming to get, but heal much quicker.
